Previously held by Loyola Library, with markings on title pages and a few preliminary pages of Volume II. Solid text blocks, foxing and heavy toning to all plates. Complete with six illustrations in Volume I and eight in Volume II, including a frontispiece and vignette title page in each volume. Volume I features a a fold-out map. (Czech 265) (Hosken 190).

Illustrated, with six plates and a large folding map of South Africa to volume I. Eight plates to volume II. Illustrations to this work of animals are by W Harvey, 'from specimens in the Author's possession'. Lithographs are by T M Baynes. The view of Fort Wiltshire is by Mr Turvey. Collated, complete. Bookplate to front pastedown of both volumes, Henry Hepburn Bright. Bound by Saul Solomon and Co, Cape Town, with the label to the front pastedown. An uncommon work. This work reflects on the geography, flora, fauna, hunting and colonies in South Africa during the nineteenth century. Steedman's work also highlights several 'new and undescribed animals'. Steedman first arrived at Cape Colony in 1820 as an independent settler arriving on a settler ship. He ran a successful business in the colony which then enabled him to fund his travels in search of natural history specimens. Over the years Steedman collected over 300 animals, including many that had not been seen before. Upon his eventual return to England and prior to the publication of this work he held an exhibition of his animals. In half calf bindings with marbled paper boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Heavy rubbing to the boards. Spines have faded due to rubbing. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Henry Hepburn Bright. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown, Saul Solomon and Co, Cape Town. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper to both volumes, dated 1926. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Tissue guard to plate at page 9 to volume II is loosening. Pages are generally bright. Heavy spotting to the first and last few pages, with occasional scattered spots and the odd light tidemark throughout. Very Good. book.

First edition of this naturalist's account of his travels in the Cape Colony over ten years. The author collected over 300 animal specimens, many of which had not been described before. He wrote his observations in this present work, which contains "much valuable information respecting the fauna of the country" (Mendelssohn II). Andrew Steedman first arrived in South Africa in 1820 on the last of the settler ships, the Duke of Marlborough. Over the next decade he undertook three major trips into the Cape to collect animal specimens. One notable description is that of the Gemsbok (Oryx gazella), which Steedman, concurring with other zoologists at the time, labelled as the source of the legend of the unicorn. He further wrote about the histories of the local tribes, the Colony of Natal, superstitions and magic, and the wreck of the Grosvenor in 1782. This latter account comes with a lithograph engraving after The Wreck of the 'Grosvenor' (1783) by Robert Smirke. The first volume also includes a map of the colony, with close-ups of the Cape, the District of George, Graham-Town, and Cape-Town. Steedman returned to England in 1833, where he displayed his animal specimens in the Colosseum, Regent's Park. In recognition of his discoveries his name was given to a breed of mongoose: Cynictis Steedmanii. Edward Lear's (1812-1888) drawing of this animal which was used as the frontispiece of volume II.
