In den WarenkorbStiff boards. Zustand: Very good. xxiii, [1], 65, [9] pages. Notes. Appendix. One of the publisher's Old World Series. Cover is seven inches by 4 and a quarter inches. Interior is seven inches by about 4 inches. The present edition is a direct reprint of that very scarce little volume Aucassin & Nicolete Done into English by And…rew Lang, London, 1887 published by Davis Nutt in the Strand). This Old World edition of Aucassin and Nicolete would be incomplete without Mr. Edmund Clarence Stedman's finely wrought translation of the best known passage of this antique story. It originally appeared in A Masque of Poets, (Boston, 1878) and hand not been included in his collected works. Andrew Lang (31 March 1844 - 20 July 1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St. Andrews are named after him. Aucassin et Nicolette (12th or 13th century) is an anonymous medieval French chantefable, or combination of prose and verse (literally, a "sung story", similar to a prosimetrum). The work probably dates from the late 12th or early 13th century, and is known from only one surviving manuscript, discovered in 1752 by medievalist Jean-Baptiste de La Curne de Sainte-Palaye (BnF, Fonds Français 2168). Stylistically, the chantefable combines elements of many Old French genres, such as the chanson de geste (e.g., The Song of Roland), lyric poems, and courtly novels-literary forms already well-established by the 12th century. It is the only known chantefable, and thus from this work the term chantefable is coined from the concluding lines: "No cantefable prent fin" ("Our chantefable is drawing to a close"). The story begins with a song which serves as prologue; and then prose takes up the narrative. It recounts the tale of Aucassin, son of Count Garin of Beaucaire, who so loved Nicolette, a Saracen maiden, who had been sold to the Viscount of Beaucaire, baptized and adopted by him, that he had forsaken knighthood and chivalry and even refused to defend his father's territories from enemies. Accordingly, his father ordered the Viscount to send Nicolette away, but instead the Viscount locked her in a tower of his palace. Aucassin is imprisoned by his father to prevent him from going after his beloved Nicolette. But Nicolette escapes, hears Aucassin lamenting in his cell, and comforts him with sweet words. She flees to the forest outside the gates, and there, in order to test Aucassin's fidelity, builds a rustic home to await his arrival. When he is released from prison Aucassin hears from shepherd lads of Nicolette's hiding-place, and seeks her bower. The lovers, united, resolve to leave the country. They board a ship and are driven to the (fictional) kingdom of "Torelore", whose king they find in child-bed while the queen is with the army. After a three years' stay in Torelore they are captured by Saracen pirates and separated. The wind blows Aucassin's boat back to Beaucaire - where he succeeds to Garin's estate. Meanwhile another wind carries Nicolette to "Cartage" (perhaps a play on Carthage or Cartagena). The sight of the city reminds her that she is the daughter of its king. She informs the king and soon it is planned that she should marry a Saracen king. She avoids this by disguising herself as a minstrel. She then sets sail for Beaucaire to rejoin her beloved Aucassin. There, before Aucassin who does not immediately recognize her, she sings of her own adventures and the love between them. Finally, in due time she makes herself known to him, and the two marry. The story ends by saying that now the two have found (lasting) happiness the narrator has nothing left to say. Sixth Edition (Limited, consisting of 925 copies).

J.-Hood; text printed in red and black; extremities gently rubbed; the odd mark, else an excellent copy.First edition, one of 550 copies (of which 500 for sale) on Japanese paper, of this translation of this French medieval romance by Andrew Lang, author of The Lang's Fairy Books (including The Blue Fairy Book), this copy in a fine contemporary binding.Written in Old French by an anonymous author in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century, Aucassin and Nicolette is the only known example of a chantefable (literally 'sung story'), a hybrid form combining prose and verse. The text survives in a single manuscript, discovered and published in 1752 by French medievalist Jean-Baptiste de La Curne de Sainte-Palaye. A playful parody of the medieval romance, it recounts the tale of Aucassin, son of Count Garin of Beaucaire, whose love for Nicolette, a Saracen captive raised as a daughter by one of the count's vassals, leads him to forsake chivalry and even to refuse to defend his father's lands against attack.Scottish anthropologist, classicist, and historian Andrew Lang (1844-1912), collector of folk stories and fairy tales, is perhaps best known for the Langs' Fairy Books (also called Andrew Lang's 'Coloured' Fairy Books), twelve collections of fairy tales produced in collaboration with his wife, Leonora Blanche Lang. This translation of Aucassin and Nicolette appeared in the same year as that of the English poet and translator Francis William Bourdillon (1852-1921), published by Kegan Paul, Trench & Co. Lang's rendering was particularly admired by Ezra Pound, who remarked that 'Lang was born in order that he might translate it perfectly [.] bringing into his English all the gay, sunlit charm of the original.' (p. 84).The wonderful engraved frontispiece is the work of George Percy Jacomb-Hood (1857-1929), who was, with Walter Crane, the illustrator of Wilde's 1888 The Happy Prince and Other Tales; he sent Wilde a copy of the present work (see Wilde's autograph letter to Jacomb-Hood, Sotheby's, 29 October 2004, lot 32).See Pound, Spirit of Romance (1910).
