Studies on social security in developing countries are usually restricted to an analysis of social security arrangements provided by the state. Most of these studies conclude that at best only very limited social security provisions are to be found, as governments generally lack the resources to implement more ambitious programmes in this area. At the same time, however, a great variety of non-state social security mechanisms operate, such as the extended family, social networks, and redistributive centres. This study first of all suggests a theoretical approach to analyze these mechanisms. Attention is paid to their function and place in society and to their operation as social security mechanisms. The theoretical approach is then applied to an analysis of the operation and dynamics of non-state social security mechanisms in the rural areas of Swaziland.

Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 306 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | When discussing development issues in Africa, it is not sufficient to simply stress the ubiquity of failure, malnutrition, disease, predatory states and war; one also has to recognize that important aspects in the lives of millions of ordinary people have been transformed over the last five decades. The contributions in this book are rooted in extensive empirical research at local, regional and/or national level in different African countries (Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, South Africa and Uganda), while some take a pan-African view. All, however, offer insight from different analytical perspectives into the heterogeneity of poverty and development processes in Sub-Saharan Africa and confront the ideas, concepts and assumptions that lie behind pro-poor policies. The volume also encourages policy makers to choose realistic policy prescriptions in an attempt to move people out of poverty.
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In Transforming Innovations in Africa the authors explore how external innovations (products, technologies, services, institutions and processes) that were envisaged, developed and designed elsewhere, came to be innovatively and sometimes unexpectedly appropriated and transformed within Africa.
