Johann Heinrich Lambert (1728-1777) "began systematic work in photometry and illumination in 1755 and five years later published this book on photometry. Photometria was the first work to accurately identify most fundamental photometric concepts, to assemble them into a coherent system of photometric quantities, to define these quantities with a precision sufficient for mathematical statement, and to build from them a system of photometric principles. These concepts, quantities, and principles are still in use today. It established what is now called illuminating engineering by showing how to photometrically compare light sources, measure the optical properties of materials, quantify aspects of vision, and calculate illumination. The book is fundamentally experimental and mathematical. One of the first to make extensive application of the calculus, Lambert's mathematical work was considered strange at the time; critics wondering of a what possible use his results could have. Many o Lambert's equations found application early in the 20th in illuminating engineering." "Photometria is in seven parts.
