Hardcover. First edition. Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. xvii, [1], 493, [1] p. Illustrations. Endpaper map. Maps. Chart. Bibliography. Notes. Index. From Wikipedia: "John Stanislaus Joyce (4 July 1849 29 December 1931) was the father of writer James Joyce. Following his father's death in 1866, John Joyce inherited substantial property around Cork, but soon moved to Dublin, where he worked for years as secretary at a distillery company. In 1882, his son James was born. A spendthrift, he proved barely able to live on the small pension, and spent much of his time drinking. His wife died in 1903, but despite his poor management of the household, he managed to outlive her by 28 years. He died at the age of 82. Of all his children, Joyce got along well only with his eldest, James, who shared in some of his traits, including his musical talent and his inability with money. John Joyce inspired several characters in his son's works, such as Simon Dedalus in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses, Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker in Finnegans Wake, and the narrator's uncle in the stories "The Sisters" and "Araby" in Dubliners." The Battle That Should Not Have Been Fought? Bibliography. Index. DJ has some wear and small tears, with front flap creased. British historian and author John Edmond Costello used unusual access to U.S. and Soviet intelligence files to challenge the official version of events in World War II and the Cold War. Mr. Costello was particularly critical of the British military establishment because it was reluctant to release World War II papers and military secrets. Costello's book "Mask of Treachery" detailed Soviet spying by Sir Anthony Blunt, former surveyor of Queen Elizabeth's pictures and a respected art historian. His books included "Days of Infamy," which blamed high-level secret deals and strategic blunders for disasters at Pearl Harbor and the Philippines. . For over 50 years historians and sailors have argued about who won the Battle of Jutland where Imperial Germany's High Seas Fleet confronted the full might of the British Grand Fleet. More than 250 ships fought throughout the evening and night to resolve a twenty-year naval rivalry in the grey wastes of the North Seas. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. xxii, 538 pages. Illustrations. Appendix I-V, Notes and Sources. Selected Bibliography. Index. Ink notation inside front cover. A portrait of Alexander Orlov describes the life and exploits of the former Soviet spymaster, detailing his role in the creation of CHEKA, the original Soviet intelligence service; his recruitment of the Cambridge spies; and his flight from Stalin. John Edmond Costello (3 May 1943 26 August 1995) was a British military historian. He was the first foreigner to have access to the operational records of the KGB and its predecessors and was instrumental in their being opened for historical research during the post-perestroika period. In 1981 his account of the Pacific War, analyzing its complex underlying causes and bringing together accounts of the fighting in its several theaters, won him a reputation for authoritative historical writing. The book soon become a standard university teaching text in America, His approach to the KGB led to his meeting Oleg Tsarev, a senior intelligence officer who had previously spent seven years under TASS cover in London and who persuaded Vladimir Kryuchkov that access to the archives of the KGB and its predecessors. As a result Costello became the first foreigner to read KGB operational files and he and Tsarev collaborated in writing an account of the career of Alexander Orlov. This account revealed Orlov as a much more pivotal figure in the history of twentieth century intelligence than previously assumed, exposing his key role in recruitment of the original members of the Cambridge spy-ring and of the atom spies in the United States. Alexander Mikhailovich Orlov (in the US assuming the name of Igor Konstantinovich Berg; 21 August 1895 25 March 1973), was a colonel in the Soviet secret police and NKVD Rezident in the Second Spanish Republic. In 1938, Orlov refused to return to the Soviet Union due to fears of execution, and instead fled with his family to the United States. He is mostly known for his book, The Secret History of Stalin's Crimes. When the Russian Civil War erupted in 1918, Orlov joined the Red Army and became a GRU (still known as the Registration Department at the time) officer assigned to the region around Kyiv, Ukraine. Orlov personally led and directed sabotage missions into territory controlled by the anti-communist White Movement. He later served with the OGPU Border Guards in Arkhangelsk. In May 1924, his cousin, Zinoviy Katznelson, who was chief of the OGPU Economic Department (EKU), invited Lev Nikolsky (his official name since 1920) to join the Soviet secret police as an officer of Financial Section 6. He was sent to the United States to obtain a genuine American passport that would allow free travel in Europe. The Great Purge continued as Stalin sought to exterminate all suspected "enemies of the people". In 1938, Orlov realized that he would soon be next. Orlov fled to Canada. Before leaving Paris, Orlov left two letters for the Soviet ambassador, one for Stalin and one for the NKVD chief Yezhov. He told them that he would reveal everything he knew about NKVD operations if any action was taken against him or his family. The NKVD did not try to locate him until 1969. After his defection in 1938, he was afraid of being killed. He wrote a letter to Stalin promising to keep all secrets he knew if Stalin spared him and his family. Orlov kept his word and published his memoir The Secret History of Stalin's Crimes only after the death of Stalin, fifteen years after his own flight. In 1963, the CIA helped him publish, The Handbook of Counter-Intelligence and Guerilla Warfare, and helped him obtain a job as a researcher at the University of Michigan Law School. Orlov never wavered in his contempt for Stalin. His last book, The March of Time, was published in 2004 by the former FBI Special Agent Ed Gazur. Derived from a Kirkus review: An absorbing and persuasive argument that a celebrated Soviet turncoat duped the US when it gave him shelter. Drawi. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. 596 pages. Co-Author's Notes. Maps. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Edwin Thomas Layton (April 7, 1903 - April 12, 1984) was a rear admiral in the United States Navy. Layton is most noted for his work as an intelligence officer during WWII. Layton was in charge of all intelligence in the Pacific Ocean area. Layton was a champion of using code-breaking information in war planning operations. Layton's book describes how Kimmel and his army counterpart at Pearl Harbor, General Walter C. Short, the commanders there, were scapegoats for failures by higher-ups in Washington, D.C. The late Admiral Layton, who was the fleet intelligence officer for Admiral Nimitz through out World War II, describes the breakdown in the intelligence process prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and shares his experiences witnessing feuding among high-level naval officers in Washington that contributed to Japan's successful attack. Roger Pineau entered the Navy in 1942 and spent most of World War II at the Naval Communications Annex in Washington, where he worked in code-breaking operations. In 1947, he became an assistant to Samuel E. Morison, a Harvard University historian and Navy rear admiral who wrote the official Navy history of World War II. John Edward Costello (1943-1995) was a British military historian, who wrote about World War I, World War II and the Cold War. He then worked as a director and scriptwriter for the BBC before writing on military history. The former Pacific Fleet intelligence officer recounts the deciphering of Japanese codes before Pearl Harbor, the failures and mishaps that contributed to the disaster, and intelligence activities in the Pacific. Why did the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor? How did they inflict the greatest military defeat in American history? What went wrong? "And I Was There" is the first book by a top-ranking American navy officer to answer these questions. Admiral Layton scrupulously kept these secrets to himself until the recent declassification of a half million documents from U.S. military archives. Only then did Layton believe he was free to tell his story. He names those who knew about Japanese intentions, how they acquired their knowledge and how they misused it. He speaks with unique authority. He was the Pacific Fleet's intelligence officer prior to Pearl Harbor, and he continued to serve in the same capacity for Admiral Nimitz throughout the war. As Layton says: he was there. First U.S. Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].…
