Zustand: Good. LIMITED EDITION VERY WARMLY INSCRIBED BY STOKES TO W.G. KELSO, JR. - Quarto, 11-1/2 inches high by 8-3/8 inches wide. Black cloth titled in gilt on the front cover and the spine with gilt ruled frames on the front cover. The covers are rubbed and soiled with wear to the corners and to the head and tail of the spine. The cloth is splitting along the bottom of both joints and the top of the front joint. xxxv, [iii] & 327 pages, illustrated with a frontispiece, title vignette, decorative dedication leaf, a second (colored) frontispiece and 119 plates (including plate no. 14a). Of the 119 plates, 9, including one colored, are double-page plates. The illustrations were made in collotype by Max Jaffe of Vienna. The front hinge is cracked. The front edge of the rear endpaper is chipped and the endpaper is pulled with a small hole at the hinge. There is dampstaining to the second half of the book, for the most part in the margins. Good. Limited edition of 600 copies "printed on the best imported handmade rag paper."The book is very warmly inscribed in ink to W. G. Kelso, Jr. by I. N. Phelps Stokes on the front endpaper: "Dear Mr. Kelso: Your encouragement at moments of doubt and depression while struggling with the Iconography and this catalogue has meant more to me than I can easily express. Sincerely and gratefully yours, I.N. Phelps Stokes. New York, August 10th, 1933."Laid in at the front in its mailing envelope is the original 4-page prospectus for the book, with the statement typed at the bottom indicating that Kelso's subscription for a copy of the book was entered on Sept. 24, 1931.
