Zustand: Very good. Very good. - An original 3-1/2 inch high by 2-1/2 inch wide sepia-toned photograph of the English surgeon & naturalist Edwin Lankester by Ernest Edwards. The surgeon is portrayed seated with legs crossed in a studio adorned with furniture and antiquities with a large book open in his lap. The portrait is mounted onto 9 inch high by 6-3/4 inch wide stiff paper with the photographer's credits "Photographed by Ernest Edwards, 20 Baker Street W." printed along the bottom of a darker tan rectangle framing the photo. The margins of the mount are lightly soiled with minor creasing to the bottom left corner. The photograph is in fine condition on a very good mount. The English photographer Ernest Edwards (1837-1903) was the inventor of the heliograph process. He is best known for his photographs of Darwin. The English surgeon and naturalist Edwin Lankester (1814-1874) made a major contribution to the control of cholera in London and was the first public analyst in England. He was a close personal friend of Darwin and Thomas Henry Huxley.
