The second Edition has a very short extra preface and an extra five pages at the rear explaining terms used at Eton-- for example 'dame' is a lady who looks after the boys when they are ill, 'extra work is a mathematical exercise consisting of a certain amount of sums to be done out of school, Atkinson is the family grocerer of great repute at Eton etc., Minor wear and rubbing front hinge very slightly cracked but holding well Lower spine slightly nicked otherwise near very good with clean text.…

Blue cloth dec gilt and patterned in black. Slightly rubbed spine ends very slightly frayed; very good George Nugent Bankes (1860- 1935) was a minor writer , military historian and anthologist. When he got to Cambridge he wrote of that too: Cambridge Trifles: Or, Splutterings from an Undergraduate Pen (1881).…

Cover shows a cricket match on unmowed grass in front of large audience inc many women, presumably mothers of the boys.Eton and Harrow arms and mottoes on trellis at sides. A previous owner (Tim D'Arch Smith) notes: "One wonders whether the outfield was quite as uneven as our artist has depicted it. Certainly the wicket was not of the best although the Valse Õs dedicatee managed to hit three sixes as Lord Harris remembers: ÔI was in with him at the time. He had just previously hit one against the old Armoury É and one over D block, and when he followed these big hits Ð very big for a boy Ð by that astounding drive over the pavilion I thought it was all right for Eton, but he was bowled by a shooter almost the next ball.Õ The composer died the following year, 24 September 1869. He was the youngest son of the distinguished shipbuilder Joseph dÕAguilar Samuda. Padwick 6563-1 although not identifying the composer. A novel set in Greece in the 4th century BC, narrated in the first person, and based upon various Greek historians. A single page introduction identifies the author as a 15 year old student in the middle division of the fifth form at Eton College. This appears to have been his only publication. Very scarce title; the NUC lists three copies. Signed presentation on the front endpaper reads: R. P. Jodell, from the author's father, J. C. Severn, Esq.'. No half title page (possibly never was) with slight creasing at spine, otherwise clean, very good+. Signedes.…
