Jahrhundert n. Chr. geschrieben, unbekannt ist aber der Ort, wo er gelebt oder gelehrt hat. Überliefert ist von ihm nur ein einziges kleines Werk, der"Liber memorialis". Dieses "Erinnerungs-" oder "Gedächtnisbuch" enthalt gewissermaßen das Grundwissen seiner Zeit - also alles, was ein junger Römer aus dem Unterricht beim Grammaticus wissen musste. Dabei handelt es sich erstaunlicherweise nicht um Stilübungen, wie sie zur Vorbereitung auf die Laufbahn eines Rechtsanwalts oder eines Politikers wichtig waren. Ampelius bietet vielmehr reines "Sachwissen" -Himmel und Erde, Sternbilder und Göttermythen, Naturwunder und Geschichte sind die Themen, mit denen er sich beschäftigt.
