Wraps. Zustand: Fair. [2], 23 pages. Staple bound at the upper left corner. Cover soiled and worn. Corners of some pages creased. Front cover weak at the staple area. Rear cover not present. Rare surviving Cold War era Polish political unrest ephemera. This Coalition for Polish Independence predates the founding of the Solidarity Trade Union by about four years. Little can currently be found about either the Coalition or The North American Study Center for Polish Affairs. The Study Center wanted to draw people's attention to this statement written by "clandestine opposition groups" in Poland. There was a "Manifesto of 59" that opposed then recently proposed changes in the Polish Constitution which were asserted were aimed as legalizing Poland's subordination to Russia. The "Program of the Coalition for Polish Independence", was described as a sober, comprehensive and timely document that was claimed to have been written by representatives of a generation already brought up under Communist domination. It had recently reached the West, after having been widely circulated 'under the table' in Poland. The Study Center claimed that 'this document is the most important of its kind to be formulated since the final subjugation of Poland by the Soviet Union which happened after the falsified elections of 1947." Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with traces of mount, and red wax seal, adhering to the reverse of the second leaf, which is franked (the franker's name and signature illegible) to 'Sir John Phippart [sic] | &c &c | No 8 New Burlington St'. Slight loss to one corner of second leaf, from breaking open of seal, with damage to one word of text. The recipient is the naval writer John Philippart (c.1784-1874), and the address is in fact that of the publishing house of Colburn and Bentley, publishers of the Naval and Military Gazette of which Philippart was the editor. The letter, which concerns a contribution to that journal by Dundas, begins: 'Dear Sir | I shall send in a few days another conclusion to your journal which I think you will deem better worth insertion than my foregoing one. It contains the battle of Fuentes and some matter immediately succeeding'. Dundas hopes that Philippart will find room for the piece in the number for March, and explains that it will take at least as much space 'as the Artle you mention to be in the Jany No and which has not come to hand'. In a postscript he asks, 'If it is not a secre[t,] Pay who is [binded?] whose opinion in my respects coincide with mine?'.

In den WarenkorbThe papers of Sir Charles Stewart Scott (an Ulsterman: see his entry in the Ulster Dictionary of Biography) are held by the British Library. The present journal, described by its writer as 'Private & most Confidential', covers the very start of his career, from Paris in 1859 to Copenhagen in 1863. The basic details of his career to this point, together with information regarding his colleagues, are to be found in the Foreign Office List for January 1865: Scott was nominated attaché in 1858 and transferred to Paris on 31 March 1859, and to Dresden on 5 October of the same year, to Copenhagen three years later, and was promoted to position of a third secretary in April of 1863. This journal is 186pp, 8vo; all edges gilt, in embossed brown cloth binding, with the label of Paris stationers Delarue & Hivert. The paper is lightly aged, with a little discoloration, and a few loosening leaves, and the binding is worn, but the general overall condition is good. On reverse of front free endpaper: '33 Rue de la Madelaine / Charles: S: Scott. / Attached to H.B.M Embassy Paris'. The diary is, as Scott admits, kept in a 'negligent way'. The first page is headed 'Private / Paris', and the first three-quarters of the journal consist of 140pp covering the period between 18 June to 16 November 1859, followed by three and a half pages headed 'Nearly A year afterwards in Octr 1860', but with only one entry: 4 October 1860. After a blank page the final quarter of the journal consists of 45pp carrying desultory entries between March 1861 and January 1863, as follows: 4pp, Dresden, 26 March 1861; 6pp, 'January 1862'; 7pp, 6 to 14 January 1862'; 16pp, 16 October to 12 November 1862; 2pp, Copenhagen, 21 December 1862; 2pp, 'January 1863'; 3pp, 'Princess Alexandra'. The diary contains a good mixture of the personal and professional. Of particular interest is Scott's description of Embassy news and gossip: reports and telegrams received, communications composed, the views of superiors, articles in the newspapers. The pre-eminent topic is the Parisian response to the conclusion of the 1859 Franco-Austrian War (Second Italian War of Independence), including a description of Napoleon III's victory parade and a couple of references to Garibaldi. Other topics include the American Civil War and the marriage of Princess Alexandra of Denmark to the future King Edward VII. There is also a description of initial reports of the Second Battle of the Taku Forts (June 1859) in the Second Opium War. On the personal side there what Scott himself sees as his 'illspent youth', with frequent references to money worries (4 August: 'we all dined at Voisin's, capital dinner but enormously dear 18 frs a head. Afterwards we played Loo, and I lost £16 - my state of mind is something awful. I could scarcely sleep a wink all night & vowed I never should play a gambling game again'. The following day he 'must borrow £25 from somebody'). He searches for new lodgings in Paris, describes his dinner engagements and socializing ('I saw some very pretty faces in the Champs Elysees'), his private reading ('I finished Tennyson's New poem. I like it as a whole very much, Enid is very pretty & so is the last Guinevre [sic] I think my favorite is Alaine (evidently the Lad of Shalott)'), the weather and much Embassy news and gossip. With reference to the Franco-Austrian War (Second Italian War of Independence), on 25 June Scott describes an early report of the victory of Napoleon III and the Sardinians at the Battle of Solferino: 'On my way down to the Chancery at 12.30 I saw an "Affiche" giving the news of a great battle dated Caravina June 24 9.15 in the morning to the effect that the Allies had engaged the whole Austr[ia]n. Army in a line of 15 miles taken all the positions & captured several guns, flags & prisoners. The details have not yet been given. It appears to have been a very bloody affair, & I should not wonder at hearing a very different version soon.' The following day is the Fê.

In den WarenkorbSee the entries on Tonyn and Paterson in the Oxford DNB, the latter stating of the recipient of this letter: 'On 28 December 1799 he married, at St Pancras chapel, London, Jane Ellen Yeats (1771/21846), daughter of David Yeats, formerly registrar of East Florida, and sister of his first cousin, the physician Grant David Yeats.' Paterson's mother was a Tonyn, and he was also related to the Marchmont family, the Earl having been his early patron. The present item is 3pp, 4to, and a bifolium. It is in fair condition, with the customary loss from the breaking of the red wax seal, which is present with an impression of a head. The letter has been folded for postage and filing, and is minuted: '1830 / To Adml Paterson [sic] relating to Marchmont family'. In pencil, presumably by Lady Paterson: 'To be kept E: J: P.' Addressed, with three postmarks, to 'Mrs. Admiral Paterson / East Cosham / Portsmouth'. Signed 'Warren H Sands'. The letter begins: 'Madam / Major General Patrick Tonyn late Governor of East Florida, the Revd Charles Tonyn Parson of Radnage, John Tonyn Commander of Cavalry in the East India Company Service & Lieut George Home of his Majestys Navy son of the deceased Mr John Home of Abbey St Balhans & sometime minister of the Gospel at Greenlaw & the heirs male of their respective Bodies, are called as Heir of Entail in the destination of the Entail of the Estate of Marchmont. As Sands understands Lady Paterson is 'a near connection of the four heirs of Entail', he asks if she can confirm that 'the three first died unmarried, & that Mr Home tho' married left no family', and who succeeded to any of their property. He is writing to her after having 'applied to my friend Miss Wauchope of Niddrie on the same subject'.

In den WarenkorbAt the time of writing, Berkeley's newly-constructed HMS Emerald had just completed her coppering and fitting-out at Woolwich. Sailing to join Jervis's Mediterranean fleet, within less than a year she would be involved in controversy. Following the Battle of Cape St Vincent (14 February 1797), in which HMS Emerald was too lightly built to take part, the victorious Jervis sent Berkeley off with a squadron of five ships in search of the disabled Spanish flagship, Santisima Trinidad. On 20 February Berkeley declined to engage when he sighted her under tow. This decision was widely criticised, and there were calls for Berkeley's court-martial. Two months later, on 26 April 1797, HMS Emerald was cruising with the Irresistible off the Spanish coast, when they captured two enemy frigates, one of which sank at sea. 1p, folio. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper with slight chipping to corners and edges. Addressed to 'Principal Officers & Commrs. of HMs. Navy'. In den WarenkorbA valuable artefact of the American War of Independence: a leaf from a British War or Colonial Office ledger detailing payments to officials in General Leslie's administration in Carolina in 1782. Among many details are references to the Loyalist units the North Carolina Highlanders and New York Volunteers, as well as to Colonel Probart Howarth, Governor of Fort Johnson, and to Colonel de Benning [Friedrich von Benning], Commander of James Island, where one of the last Battles of the war, at which Kosciuszko was nearly killed, would take place a few days after the entries those of the entries in this ledger. 1p, folio. On one side of a leaf of laid paper with fleur-de-lys armorial watermark. Worn and slightly discoloured, with closed tear along central fold line repaired with archival tape. The leaf is evidently part of a ledger. It is numbered 19, and headed '99 / Extraordinaries in North America', with the payments being to 'David Thomas Esqr / Carolina'. The sums involved are substantial: the opening balance brought forward is for £214,908 11s 9 1/2d, and the closing balance to be carried forward being £216,710 7s 7 1/2d. The leaf has been neatly ruled in red, with columns for 'Warrants' (subdivided into 'by whom granted' and 'Dates'), details of payments and sums paid. The ten payments, nine of them dating from 10 October and the last one from 11 October 1782, are all on warrants granted to 'Lt. Genl. Leslie'. The first six entries are highly detailed, and the seventh to the tenth are additions to the sixth. First, for £111 5s 0d: 'Paid Capt. John McKinnon, Depy. Quar. Masr. Genl. witht. dedn. being his Pay at 10s/. a day, & Pay for Lieutts. Rankin & Bard, as actg. Depy. Quar. Masr. Genl. at 5s/. a day from 1st. July to 30th. Septr. 1782. also for Lieutt. Condner from 1st. July to 17th. Septr. 1782 at 5s/ P day'. The second, for £39 17s 4d: 'Paid Lt. John Reeve, of 82d Regt. of Foot, witht. dedn. being Pay for himself as actg. Quar Masr. at 4s/8d. Pr day. & for Mr. Mc.Pherson as Actg. Adjt. to said Regt. at 4s/- Pr. Day from 1st. July to 30th. Septr. 1782'. Third, for £155 13s 8d (annotated '1 Warrt. at Audrs. Office'): 'Paid Lieut Edwd. Scott, Secy. to Genl. Leslie being for Money paid by himself to Coll. de Benning as an Extra Allownce during his Command on James Island from 16th. Mau to 6th Octr. 1782'. Fourth, for £31 1s 10d: 'Paid Ensn. Robt. Mc.Pherson, being Pay for Captn. McRa. late of the North Carolina Highlanders at 5s/- Pr. day & for Ensn. McKay at 1s./10d. Pr Day from 25th. Septr. to 24th. Decr. 1782.' Fifth, for £502 16s 8d: 'Paid Captn. Willm. Johnson, Paymts. to the New York Volunteers being their Pay from 25th. Augst. to 24th. Octr. 1782'. Sixth, £405 18s 4d: 'Paid the followg. Civil Officers of South Carolina, being an Allowce. made to them by order of the Lords Commissrs. of His Majesty's Treasury, all witht. dedn. Vizt. Honble Willm. Bull Esqr. Lt. Govr. from 5th. July 1781 to 10th. Octr. 1782'. Seventh, for £88 15s 10d: 'Honble. Thos. Skoltow Esqr. Secy. from Do. to Do.' Eighth, for £180 19s 2d: 'Honble Thos. K. Gordon Esqr. Chief Justice from Do. to Do.' Ninth, for £31 14s 1d: 'Jas. Johnson Esqr. Clerk of the Crown from Do. to Do.' Tenth, for £253 13s 11d: 'Col. Probart Howarth Govr. of Fort Johnson, from Do. to Do.' In 1826 advantage was taken of the blank reverse of the leaf, which was evidently torn out of the ledger at this point, when three sets of itemized commissary accounts were given, after 'Stock taken Sept 1. 1826', the sums involved (in one case hams, bacon, butter and other items totaling £10,000 5s 7d). It was then folded four times into a packet dated 'Sept 1. 1826'. See Image.
