Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: near fine. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, xii, [2], 363pp. Blue hardcover, spine in blue cloth, embossed illustration on front cover. Stated "first published in 1963" on copyright page. Bookplate on front pastedown endpaper. In the publisher's dust jacket, retai…l price on front flap, some light wear to top edge of spine, bright illustrations, an about fine example. Inscribed by Secretary of State Dean Rusk to Thomas C. Mann on front free endpaper. In the weeks following the Kennedy assassination, President Lyndon Johnson appointed Thomas C. Mann (1912-1999) as Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs. This was Johnson's first presidential appointment and a signal that he was departing from Kennedy era policies towards Latin America. During his term, Mann advocated for free enterprise in Latin America, in contrast to promoting democracy in the region. This policy change also led to an increased military presence in South America, with Johnson placing more than 22,000 troops in the Dominican Republic to oppose communist aggression. Mann resigned from the State Department in 1966 and died in 1999. Dean Rusk (1909-1994) held the position of Secretary of State from 1961-1969, serving in both the John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson administrations. Rusk is the second longest serving Secretary of State after Cordell Hull. The Winds of Freedom by Secretary of State Dean Rusk, inscribed to Thomas C. Mann, Assistant Secretary of State and the architect of American foreign policy in Latin America. (illustrator). Signed.

Zustand: Fine. West Washington Square [Philadelphia], April 13 & April 27, 1890., 1890. Fine. - Two four-page autograph letters, each penned on 4 sides of 6-5/8 inch high by 4-1/8 inch wide "222 West Washington Square" stationery with an attached integral leaf. Addressing his old friend, the architect William Robert Ware, as "De…ar Ware", the Shakespearean scholar first expresses his appreciation at hearing from him "How good of you to come with your kindly words of cheer!" writing of his scholarly work that "Days must be filled, and life must be lived - and the chiefest satisfaction I can find in the successive volumes is that they are landmarks bearing tangible evidence that thus much of my allotted march is finished and the end thus much nearer." He concludes by asking Ware if he might have a photograph lying around that he can send him. Signed in full "Horace Howard Furness" and dated "13 April '90" at the end. Writing again a couple of weeks later, Furness writes "Of course you haven't inferred from my silence that I didn't appreciate your great kindness in sending me your photograph. You know your man better." He goes on to say that, as he had no photograph of himself at hand, "Within an hour therefrom a message to the photographer was on its way, and only yesterday p.m. did the counterfeit presentment reach my hands & which I now transmit to you." Dated "27 April 1890" and signed in full "Horace Howard Furness". Folded for mailing, both letters are near fine. The American Shakespearean scholar Howard Horace Furness (1833-1912) was the son of the Unitarian minister and abolitionist William Henry Furness and brother of the architect Frank Furness. Graduating from Harvard, he went to study in Germany before returning to the U.S. where he was admitted to the Philadelphia Bar in 1859. He joined the Shakspere [sic] Society of Philadelphia in 1860. The Variorum of 1821 gathered what was believed to be all Shakespearean lore of that period but much which had been written since was scattered all over the place. Furness went on to edit the "New Variorum" editions of Shakespeare which came to be referred to as the "Furness Variorum", collecting in a single work 300 years of reference, antecedent works, influences and commentaries. The American architect and author William Robert Ware (1832-1915) founded two important American architectural schools. He first began working for Richard Morris Hunt and subsequently partnered with the civil engineer Edward S. Philbrick in the firm of Philbrick and Ware. Partnering with Henry Van Brunt to from Ware & Van Brunt, they designed many of Boston's significant buildings including Harvard's Memorial and Weld Halls and the fountain at the Providence Atheneum in Rhode Island. Ware was the first professor of architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and, after moving to New York City, he founded the School of Architecture at Columbia University.

Zustand: Very good. - Over 50 words typed on 8-1/2 inch high by 5-1/8 inch wide "244 Madison Avenue" stationery with an attached blank leaf. Having accepted American impresario and lecture agent James B. Pond's invitation to serve on the committee welcoming Maurice Maeterlinck to America, Cass Gilbert is further pleased to accep…t his invitation to meet Maeterlinck in the green room prior to the lecture. Gilbert writes ".I am pleased to accept your invitation to meet Mr. Maeterlinck in the Green Room and to sit on the stage during the lecture." Signed "Cass Gilbert". Folded for mailing, with a tiny chip to the top left corner. Very good. The American architect Cass Gilbert (1859-1934) was an early proponent of skyscrapers. He designed the Woolworth Building, which was then the tallest building in the world. Gilbert designed numerous museums, libraries, and state and federal buildings, including the United States Supreme Court building. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota with his family and at age 17 joined the architectural firm of Abraham M. Radcliffe. He entered MIT's architectural program in 1878. Returning to Minnesota, he designed numerous buildings including the Minnesota State Capitol and St. Paul's Endicott Building. Moving to New York, he was commissioned to design the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House. He went on to design the Woolworth Building, the support towers for the George Washington Bridge, and the U.S. Supreme Court Building among many many others.James B. Pond, the American impresario and lecture agent who headed the J.B. Pond Lyceum Bureau, brought the great Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck to America for a series of lectures. The first lecture took place at Carnegie hall on January 2nd, 1920. Unfortunately Maeterlinck failed to carry out his intention to lecture in English because of his labored "phonetic" English. He declared his intention to continue his lectures in French and have the translation read by another person. As a result, the lecture tour was a failure and lawsuits ensued on both sides.

4to. 2 pp. on 2 ff. Ramblings from a man who has loved and lost with the blame firmly placed upon his own shoulders; a vexing manuscript from Wright clearly revealing the effects of his personal upheavals. "I am regarded as though I had stolen myself, gone off with what was not my own. And I am traduced, derided, despised, held…up to public contempt and loathing. My character is remorselessly assassinated: no means however vile are spared to injure my property or my work. It is a falsity that men respect and honor independent of thought and action. Tolerance in anything or anywhere is plainly a gentle lie. It is in no man's heart. The perception of Beauty is a moral test. The body is the first proselyte the soul makes. Our life is but the soul made known by its fruits, -- the body. The whole duty of man is expressed in one line. Make to yourself a perfect body! To be a man is to do a man's work! The true laborer is recompensed by his labor not by his employer. Laws are a matter of lawyers and judges. Lawyers and judges, as such, are not men of sense or principle but creatures of law: In any high moral sense they are not men at all! Earth song. Universal [in pencil]. I who have shown that I can behave particularly well am put under bonds for good behaviour! Every man should see that his influence is on the side of justice -- and let the courts make their own characters. Men talk about Bible miracles because there is no miracle in their lives. Cease to gnaw that crust, there is a ripe fruit overhead! Woe to him who wants a companion, for he is unfit even to be the companion even of himself! We inspire friendship in men when we have contracted friendship with the gods. Any reverence, even [if] a material thing proceeds from an elevation of character?". - With a few revisions; first page devoid of 3 inches of paper, marginal fraying and chipping, the two pages affixed together at head.
