Hale begins by stating that he has both of the recipient's telegrams, and thanking him for his 'promptness and readiness to forward my wishes'. In the meantime he had 'determined that the simplest solution to my troubles was to give up my Topeka appointment, as I was at liberty to do. This I have done and you may rely on me for the 18th, and as I hope for the whole Convention.' He asks to be directed to an individual who can give him 'the most information on the early history and present condition of A. D. P.?' He has 'a conception that there is somewhere a pamphlet containing a life of Mr. Eels the founder', and asks to be given a 'clue to this'. He concludes by asking to be addressed 'at 39 Highland St. Boston'.

Zustand: Very good. 1897 through 1908., 1897 through 1908. Very good. - Autograph manuscript poems penned by the art critic, museum curator and author Charles M. Kurtz on 3 voyages aboard ocean liners. The first 2 poems are dated May 12, 1897 and are penned on the Stationery of the Holland-America Line steamship "S.S. Spaarndam". The first of these is a one-and-a-quarter page manuscript with over 265 words penned on both sides of 11-1/8 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide "S.S. Spaarndam" stationery. The poem is written in praise of the ship, voyage, and crew "The Netherlands Line is the Line for me / With steady boats - for a placid sea - / Though not at all fast, yet from danger free / For no 'chances' are ever taken." Dated and signed in full "Charles M. Kurtz". Folded several times for mailing, the bottom edge is chipped. Penned on that same date is a second copy of the same manuscript poem neatly penned on a cropped sheet of the ship's stationery measuring 11 inches high by 5-3/8 inches wide and signed in full "Charles M. Kurtz". Folded for mailing with a couple of tiny chips at the edges of the folds. The S.S. Spaarndam was initially a ship of the White Star line, then named the S.S. Arabic. It was its first steel-hulled vessel built for White Star. It was sold to the Holland America Line in February 1890 and renamed the S.S. Spaarndam. On October 6, 1900, Kurtz has written a poem of over 320 words penned on 2 sheets of 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide "Holland-American Line / S.S. Maasdam" stationery. Again, praising the ship and crew, he writes stanzas about his luxurious cabin and observations of other passengers "We have passengers here from every clime / And they keep things lively most of the time / I cannot keep up with them in my rhyme / or even in prose relation", "Here are passengers aged and some some quite young / They speak every native and foreign tongue." and concludes with a postcript "We have parsons and lawyers and doctors to burn / We've enough pretty girls any man's head to turn / And here is the place human nature to learn / Every day is real delectati on". Kurtz has made numerous corrections throughout. Though not signed, the poem is dated "'S.S. Maasdam' / October 6, 1900". Both sheets are folded for mailing with a couple of tiny chips at the edges of the folds. The "S.S. Maasdam" was built in 1871 and sailed for the Holland-American Line from 1889 through 1902. Charles M. Kurtz penned 2 lengthy poems in 1908 aboard the "'Allan' Line Royal Mail Steamers" "Hesperian". The first, dated August 18, 1908, is titled "Hesperiana" and consists of over 800 words penned on 4 sides of 8 inch high by 5 inch wide "'Allan' Line Royal Mail Steamers" stationery with the ship's name "Hesperian" penned by Kurtz. As before, Kurtz praises the ship and crew in rhyme but gets a little more playful about ocean travel "The mal-de-mer - it hides in its lair / When the doctor shows his face / It has no power beyond the hour / When the Doctor comes, but doth cringe and cower / And vanish in disgrace!", "There isn't a Jonah among them - I trust / Who'll have to be cast overboard; / Yet a whale has been seen in the wake of the ship, / Perhaps with the hope that some person may slip - / To occupy quarters untoward!" Signed in full "Charles M. Kurtz". Folded for mailing, else fine. In a second version of his lengthy poem titled "Hesperiana", dated August 21, 1908 aboard the "Hesperian" Kurtz has penned over 700 words on three-and-a-half sides of 8 inch high by 5 inch wide "'Allan' Line Royal Mail Steamers" stationery, "No 'record trip' in respect to speed / But a 'record-trip' in each mind; / For the time we have lost in the fog's delay / Seems to bring us closer day by day / And in deeper friendship bind". Signed in full "Charles M. Kurtz". Kurtz has additionally penciled the names of some passengers with numbers (possibly that of their cabins), with additional numbers in red, vertically at the end. Folded for mailing, else fine. The "R.M.S. Hesperian" sailed from Glasgow to Quebec and Montreal. A Grand Charity Concert was presented on the 21st of August, 1908, the date of Kurtz last version of his poem, to raise funds for the Montreal Sailors Institute. These manuscript poems are offered together with The first edition of Charles M. Kurtz's book "Official Illustrations (Three Hundred and Thirty-six Engravings) from the Art Gallery of the World's Columbian Exposition", edited by Charles M. Kurtz and published by George Barrie in Philadelphia in 1893. The book is bound in gilt decorated creamy white cloth and consists of 383 profusely illustrated pages. The book's covers are soiled and darkened and the book is in good condition. The American art critic, author, and museum curator Charles McMeen Kurtz (1855-1909), was appointed as one of Halsey Ives' assistants in the Fine Arts Department of the World's Columbian Exposition. He also worked as the Assistant Director of Fine Arts for the United States for the 1900 Paris Exposition and was art director for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. He managed exhibitions for the Art Union and the American Art Association and published the National Academy Notes.

249 x 148 mm. 4 pages. Original pale green printed wrappers. 2 photographs. Signed on the front cover by Lester Young, Bud Powell, the German big band leader Kurt Edelhagen, and the saxophonist Franz von Klenck. Additionally signed by all four members of the Modern Jazz Quartet (John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath, and Conny Kay), two of the three members of the René Urtreger Trio (René Urtreger and Christian Garros), and the German music journalist Joachim-Ernst Berendt, whose "Jazz Book" (first published in 1952) became a definitive work on jazz, translated into many languages and still updated and reprinted. - Marking Powell's first and Lester's last performing tour of Europe, the stellar line-up for Birdland owner Morris Levy's three-week tour also featured Miles Davis. "It is quite clear that Lester had a good time and enjoyed being on stage with Miles Davis", states biographer Frank Büchmann-Møller, "some of the photographs from the tour show him with an almost happy smile on his face" (p. 187). There exists a partial recording of the concert in which Lester and Miles can be heard performing "How High the Moon" and "Lester Leaps In". Although Powell was clearly present on this date, he did not apparently perform: as biographer Guthrie P. Ramsey explains, he was "fighting many personal and professional battles" at this time (p. 187). - Together with a vintage gelatin silver publicity portrait, signed in blue ballpoint pen by Lester Young (252 x 204 mm; pinholes in border at top and bottom, small piece missing from the top right-hand corner, small patch of emulsion peeled and missing at Lester's elbow), and a small candid black and white photograph of Lester Young with a chic female companion at the entrance to the Hotel Claridge in Paris, circa 1940s (87 x 61 mm; light creasing otherwise in good condition). - Frank Büchmann-Møller, You Just Fight for Your Life: The Story of Lester Young (New York, Praeger, 1990). Add to this the loose mounting, which causes the engraving to cast a shadow on the white paper underneath, thereby softening, refining and enriching the tone of the whole, and it will be perceived that a secret of the art is being for the first time formally shared with such part of the world abroad as that to which this work shall fall."
