Zafar and the Raj is a study of the formative phase of the history of colonial Delhi, a phase that from its duality, social and political, may be referred to as Anglo-Mughal. From 1803 onwards there were two centres of authority in the imperial city: the Residency and the Palace. The competing influence… of the Palace determined the manner in which colonial authority was established in Delhiand marked the limits of this authority. Simultaneously, the association of the Mughal emperor's name with Delhi, combined with the participation in fin-de-siècle Mughal court ritual by the East India Company's officials, was to shape the colonial perception of Delhi as the premier imperial city of the subcontinent. The information available in the colonial archive about emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar (1775-1862; r. 1837-57), and his two immediate predecessors, is used to reconstruct the history of the city in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, focussing on the period c. 1803-1857. This book is also a political biography of Zafar. It aims to present the story of his life not, as is typical, from the perspective of the revolt of 1857, but in terms of Zafar as a prominent local aristocratic figure who was part of the Urdu-speaking urban elite of the first half of the nineteenth century. The ways in which his life, coping as it was with the Raj, intersected with that of several figures that belonged to this class, tells us much about India's encounter with colonialism. In the process, we get to know something about the intertwined destinies of, among others, Akbar Shah, Azurda, Chiman Lal, Ghalib, Rammohun Roy, Shamsuddin, Vazir Khanam and, of course, Zafar.

Sindias and the Raj is a study of the Sindia state of Gwalior during the colonial period It traces the history of one of the leading princely states of the British Indian empire from its first major military encounter with the British at the beginning of the century to the eve of the Revolt of 1857 In doing so the book explores…the fascinating factional conflicts at the Gwalior durbar and the connections these had with the politics of the powerful Sindia army It argues that the colonial subjugation of Gwalior was a long-drawn process spread over nearly five decades and was not sufficiently achieved until the late 1850s certainly not in 1818 as is often assumed by standard histories of the state This resistance was largely due to the very strong tradition in the Gwalior territories of opposition to colonial intervention as seen in a series of popular uprisings during the first half of the century culminating in the events of 1857-8 The tradition was reinforced by the assertiveness vis-a-vis the East India Company of the dominant section of its ruling class which drew strength from a formidable fighting force comprising soldiers who upheld the legacy of the fierce turn-of-the-century Anglo-Maratha military conflict and which was sustained by a resilient economy that profited immensely from opium smuggling These are all linkages that have hitherto remained unexploredSindias and the Raj also examines the political economy of princely Gwalior while paying close attention to the responses of various classes in the state to colonial intervention responses ranging from outright collaboration to armed conflict It also attempts a reappraisal of several facets of the history of Malwa in the colonial period including the history of the Pindaris and the trade in Malwa opium 158 pp.

In Governors of Empire, historian Amar Farooqui traces the journeys each of these men undertook, from arriving on Indian shores, through acquiring territories using equal parts trade agreements and political deceit, all the way to returning to Britain considerably wealthier than before. Beginning with Robert Clive, the self-proclaimed hero of the British imperial project who played a pivotal role in the annexation of Bengal, the book follows several important governors whose actions ultimately delivered India into the hands of the Crown. After Clive came Warren Hastings, who began his tenure as governor of Bengal and settled down to govern both Bengal and Bihar. His 'rule' was followed by the regime of Charles Cornwallis, often portrayed as the golden age of British rule in India-a claim supported by colonially-sponsored historiography alone. After him, lesser-known figures like John Shore and Robert Hobart were followed by Richard Wellesley, under whom the system of 'subsidiary alliances' became a regular feature of the Company's expansionist policy in India. Lord Moira came next, and demolished the peshwai, destroying the rule of the Marathas in western India. William Bentinck's governor-generalship then marked an interlude before a violent phase of large-scale warfare that completed the Company's conquest of the subcontinent. Lord Dalhousie, who followed Bentinck, played a key role in the annexation of Punjab and Awadh, expanding the Company's frontiers to cover swathes of northern India. He was succeeded by Charles Canning, the last governorgeneral to be appointed by the Company, and John Lawrence, the last of the Company's old timers to rule over the Indian empire (he was crucial to the recapture of Delhi after the Revolt of 1857). Pushing the Boundaries of South Asian History is a tribute to Professor Dwijendra Narayan Jha's skill and craftsmanship as a historian.
