First Edition. 16mo in 4s, pp.89, [1], [1(blank)]; a very good copy, bound in contemporary red half morocco with red paper sides, spine gilt in compartments with gilt black morocco lettering-piece, edges speckled blue, marbled endpapers, yellow ribbon placemarker; rather worn, headcap chipped, corners bumped; armorial bookplate…of Charles Edmund Merrill junior (18771942), gilt red morocco booklabel of Cortlandt Bishop, and subsequent bookplate of the Royal College of Art to front pastedown, with its blind stamp to title and lending card to rear free endpaper.First edition of Amaduzzi's philological and bibliographical commentary on Anacreon, addressed to Bodoni, 'artis typographicae restitutor' (p.3). Born in Savignano di Romagna (now Savignano sul Rubicone), the classicist and philologist Giovanni Cristofo Amaduzzi (17401792) began his studies in Rimini before moving to Rome in 1762, where he devoted himself not only to Latin and Greek but also to several Oriental languages. Under the patronage of ClementXIV, he was appointed Professor of Greek at the Archiginnasio della Sapienza in 1769 and supervisor of the printing press of the Propaganda Fide in 1770, in which capacity he oversaw the publication of numerous dictionaries, including in Etruscan, Malay, Tibetan, Burmese, Persian, Ge?ez, and Armenian. Amaduzzi's commentary on Anacreon was published in the same format as Bodoni's Anacreon of the same year. Brooks notes that, despite De Lama's claim that it sold out quickly, it is still listed among the books available from Bodoni's widow in her catalogues of 1820 and 1830. First with the fine woodcut animal letters --- A lovely Armenian alphabet published by the Propaganda Fide in Rome in a bid to spread the Catholic faith to the Caucasus. The book contains three fonts of the Armenian alphabet: rotundo (erkatagir), cursivo (bolorgir) and figurato (trchnagir, or bird letters -- here in the beautifu…l shape of fantastic birds, fishes, and lions, in a variety of dynamic and amusing poses). The trchnagir, which originate in the Armenian illuminated manuscript tradition, are particularly well executed here in wood engraving, and were not present in the first edition, over a century and a half prior in 1623. A short section on Armenian grammar follows, as well as a number of Catholic prayers translated into Armenian, including the Lord's Prayer and Ave Maria. The philologist Giovanni Cristofano Amaduzzi (also Amaduzio, 1740-92) wrote the Latin introduction on pp. 3-12, giving a brief history of the Armenian language and script, as well as a short bibliography of the Fide's other Armenian books. This material wasn't included either in the 1623 edition. Amaduzzi was superintendent of the Propaganda Fide press in Rome and professor of Greek at the University of Rome ('La Sapienza'). He published many works for the Propaganda Fide, including Theophrastus' "Characters" and similar alphabets including the 'veterum Etruscorum' [Etruscan], 'tangutanum, sive tibetanum' [Tibetan], a 'brammhanicum sev indostanum' [Hindi/Urdu] and 'grandonico-malabaricum' [Malayam]. Provenance: Physical description:Octavo (17.8 x 11.8 cm). 32 pp. incl. title with woodcut device, pp. 18-20 with figurative woodcut initials. Contemporary block-printed wrappers in colour with floral ornaments. Condition:Minimally soiled nearspine, recased; very occasional light foxing or waterstaining, but a lovely, fresh example. Bibliography.

8vo (120 x 182 mm). XXVIII, 100 pp. With 8 numbered folding tables. Contemporary blue wrappers. First edition. The first type specimen of the Grantha or Malabar alphabet, now most frequently known as Malayalam. A prominent work from the Propaganda Fide series of grammars of oriental languages that appeared from 1629 until the ea…rly 19th century. Besides fulfilling her evangelical function for the church, the Congregatio also played an important role in the study and dissemination of non-Western languages, their Alphabeta series including studies of Burmese, Hindustani, Armenian, Syriac, Arabic, Hebrew, the Ethiopian Semitic languages (Ge'ez and Amharic) and Bulgarian. "The best known products of the Propaganda Press, apart from its missals, grammars, and dictionaries, are the Alphabeta" (Smitskamp 193). - The present grammar was edited by Giovanni Amaduzzi (1740-92) using types prepared by Clemente Peani (1731-82), a missionary and member of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide who had spent several years in Kerala devoting himself to his missionary work and the study of Malayalam. The "Alphabetum" is intended to teach aspiring missionaries the reading and writing of Malayalam, comprising numerous examples in Grantha script in the angular Travancore variety that is easily confused with the Tamil script, giving syllables, numerals, and an explanation of the particular characteristics of the writing system, concluding with translations of popular Catholic prayers and the Ten Commandments in Malayalam language and type. - Wrappers somewhat worn. Evenly browned throughout. A fine copy comprising all of the frequently lacking plates. - From the stock of the Paris bookseller Benjamin Duprat (1802-65); his ownership to pastedown. - Smitskamp, PO 207. Birrell & Garnett 16. De Gubernaties 329. Brunet I, 197. Graesse I, 85. Ebert I, 460.

Zustand: Very Good+. Quarto (32 cm); [4]. xciv, 100, [2] pages. Engraved title vignette, engraved vignette of the arms of Don José Nicolás de Azara (by Domenico Cagnoni). Text in Latin and Greek. Printed in capitals on blue paper. In contemporary dark green-brown speckled calfskin, ruled in gilt and bordered with a frond and flo…wer tool, all edges gilt. Spine in six compartments titled in gilt and gilt stamped with "Greek pavilion" tool. Greek key turn-ins. Pink marbled endleaves. The whole preserved in recent custom slipcase. Spine fading to brown and beginning to split slightly near head and tail. Few abrasions on boards. Text effectively unblemished. Much admired edition in a large quarto format of a text Bodoni had printed in octavo the previous year. Intended in part to show off his new Greek capital letters, he printed the entire text on tinted paper in caps and small caps, in sharp distinction to any prior edition. Bodoni was actively trying to expand his commercial market and his reputation into Spain during this period, hence the dedication to Azara, a Spanish noble and sometime resident of Parma.

Rome, Typis Sacrae Congregationis de Propaganda Fide, 1783 ; in-8, 24 pp., brochure d'attente bleue de l'époque (minimes traces du temps). Smitskamp, Philologia Orientalis, n° 79. Streit, Bibliotheca Missionum, vol. V, p. 816. Brunet I, 197. 1783.

8vo. 55, (1) pp. With woodcut printer's device on title-page (Christ sending the Apostles forth to spread the Gospel). Unbound as issued. Very scarce catalogue of oriental books printed by the Propaganda Fide press. Pages 10-12 list no fewer than 28 publications in Arabic, many of which (such as Scialac's and Sionita's 1613 vers…ion of the "Doctrica Christiana") are still considered milestones of Arabic typography. Prints in other languages such as Chaldaean, Persian, Syriac, and Ottoman Turkish bear further witness to the unrivalled excellence of the Propaganda Press in the field of Middle Eastern typography. A first such catalogue had appeared in 1765; of this second, expanded edition OCLC lists no more than two copies (Tübingen and Copenhagen). - Well-preserved throughout. - OCLC 465974789.
