Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The title of this one-movement highly-pianistic creation lets us know clearly where the composer is comfortable. But within that skin in this work are two competing sonic worlds. Beginning chorally in big harmonies, that mood is soon interrupted by loud running 16th note octaves.Slow, strong, and measured then seems to face off against young, strong, and impetuous throughout the piece. Or perhaps consider it a dialogue between two strong players; one the Emersonian voice of quiet, time-seasoned reason and the other wild and quicksilver, both in tempo and in rhythmic variety. The drama of In My Own Skin lies within these disjunct phrases, as each seems to argue as to what the whole piece should be about. Jazz and classical implications also keep things interesting. Some might hear those opening chords not so much as a classical chorale as like jazz big-band brass and winds, the running 16ths as something out of Lenny Tristano or Thelonious Monk. Of course Singleton fans know that it is about both, sonic and cultural worlds which live in his skin in comfortable equality. At midpoint in the piece the composer inserts a sly almost-Caribbean tune that seems to try to quiet the controversy down a bit. But soon we are back at it, and as the work closes the voice of placid reason has the last word. Carman Moore (2012).…

Neuware - Between Sisters (1990) is a musical setting of The House Slave, a poem by former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Rita Dove, and is scored for alto flute, piano, soprano, and vibraphone. Singleton here captures the just-awakening house slave woman's total powerlessness in the face of her field slave sister's and indeed all field slaves' hopelessly brutalized circumstances. Silence, sometimes as if listening for something and at other times seeming to dramatize a lack of answers, is a major player in the sonic palette of this polytonally blue work. Gone are the flute's typically florid lyricism and the piano's dexterity and power; and gone are the vibraphone's customary sexiness and quicksilver runs. Instead both soprano vocalist and the instruments moan and peep out their pitches and unresolvable harmonic consequences until suddenly at one heart-wrenching penultimate passage the singer shouts forth the desperate words ''oh, pray,' she cries,' ''oh, pray.'' Then quiet again as the vibraphone turns to the fragile steady beating of muffled quarter notes (called 'dead strokes') over held notes in the other instruments as the soprano sings 'and as the fields unfold to whiteness, and they spill like bees among the fat flowers,' as if the clock that never stops beats hopelessly on for the slave. The typical African-American church service seems to be a source for this piece with its interplay of sections and colors, yet the work in form and rhythmic choices is clearly 'classical' and never breaks out into easy imitations of, for example, gospel music.The work opens with the choir singing the spiritual 'My Lord, What a Mornin'' in octaves, sung flat-out a cappella, as might happen in church. The instrumental section following this opening feels very much like a thoughtful response by the congregation. Instruments seem to behave like individual churchgoers, colorfully dressed and answering various episodes with individual thoughts. As for any fears that the mighty organ might drown out the proceedings, Singleton puts that to rest by employing it almost like another choir or section of the choir. The trumpet soloist does not blast us into heaven, it tends to sing and, we find out later, is preparing us for the spiritual 'Where Shall I Be When the Firs' Trumpet Soun' ' Even the tenor soloist behaves much like just another (but still important) instrument.The composer has chosen to not only feature spirituals, but also to set a poetic text called A Christian Prayer, whose main message, almost like some modern-day Kyrie, calls out 'save us . teach us .' and extols the importance of humility and the defeat of violence. Singleton has always been a composer who has simultaneously answered the call to carry out what he feels is his duty to his fellow humans while using the finest of his art to do so, and Prayer finds him at the top of his game.- Carman Moore.…
