Se puede decir que ALVARES DEL VAYO fue el más caracterizado miembro de la cultura marxista revolucionaria en el seno del PSOE, junto a otros dirigentes socialistas como Ramón Lamoneda o Gabriel Morón. Álvarez del Vayo estuvo en Rusia durante la guerra civil y llegó a a tratar con Lenin y a Trotsky. En 1926 escribió La nueva Rusia, libro en el que resume los viajes que efectuó a este país en relación a la URSS y al papel de Trotsky, cuenta con dos tiempos claramente diferenciados. En el primero figura como el entusiasta prologuista de Mis peripecias en España (1933), en un tiempo en el que Trotsky seguía siendo junto con Lenin- el principal personaje de la odisea revolucionaria. Hasta mitad de los años treinta, fue uno de los más constantes partidarios de un entendimiento con la oposición española, obsequioso amigo personal de Juan Andrade y de María Teresa García Banús Durante la guerra civil empero, se mostrará como el muro institucional con el que según sus propias palabras- se encontró Dos Passos en España, e hizo la vista gorda ante el caso de José Robles, tema sobre el que Julio es retratado en la conocida obra de Ignacio Martínez de Pisón, Enterrar a los muertos .
