Attractive second edition, improved and enlarged, of Alunno's important concordance of Petrarch's vocabulary, handsomely bound for the English diplomat and bibliophile Sir William Pickering (1516 1575). Pickering was "Knight Marshal to Henry VIII () He was educated at Cambridge. In 1539 he was a Gentleman in Waiting to Henry VIII and is said to have served in the war at Calais. He was knighted at the coronation of Edward VI, and sent on a special embassy to France in 1551. Later that year he returned to Paris as a permanent Ambassador, being recalled a month after Mary's accession in 1553. Involved in plots against the Spanish marriage, he found it prudent to travel in Italy and Germany, returning in 1555. Elizabeth employed him as her ambassador to the Netherlands and Germany in 1558 1559, and he was even mentioned as a possible husband for the Queen." (BAB, Pickering, William, Sir). Pickering was a noted collector with a particular taste for Italian books these constitute the majority of his surviving library many of which he probably acquired during a trip to Venice in the 1550s. Francesco Alunno (or De Bailo, 1485-1556) was an Italian grammarian and writer of Ferrara. While working as a teacher of arithmetic and calligraphy in Udine and then in Venice, Alunno composed and published a series of impressive lexicographic works, culminating in his "La fabbrica del mondo" a comprehensive vocabulary of Petrarch, Dante, Boccaccio and other Italian writers. "Le osservationi sopra il Petrarca", first published in 1539, is Alunno's first work. A vast glossary of Petrarchan words in alphabetical order, 'Le osservationi' provides definitions for each word or difficult expression, a quotation from Petrarch showing its use in context, advice on when to use different spellings, and page reference numbers to the printed edition of Petrarch's works published by Gherardo the same year. This second edition was considerably enriched with more entries and corrected in many places by the author. Also added are a few of letters attesting to Alunno's relations with Venetian writers and printers (e.g. Girolamo Ruscelli), as well as an entertaining fictitious epistolary exchange between Petrarch and the author, with Petrarch's letter at the beginning and Alunno's response at the end of the work. The woodcut portrait of the author was employed for various works by Alunno and designed for the first edition of 'Le osservationi'; for this edition, the cartouche title was recut. The beautiful full-page allegorical woodcut depicts Mercury, bent over a plow pulled by Pegasus by the light of an oil lamp suspended from the branch of a laurel tree. In the foreground, a dog and a crane stand at the sides of a dry trunk. This enigmatic image, which only appears in a handful of books, has been identified as the mark or emblem of the venetian printer Marcantonio Magno (c. 1480-1549), which was then adopted by Paolo Gherardo after Magno's death.

Legatura antica in mezza pelle e angoli, carta marmorizzata sui piatti, dorso a nervi con filetti oro e titolo su tassello. Ritratto silografato dell'autore sulla pagina di titolo, grande impresa tipografica al verso del foglio 259 e ripetuta in fine, capilettera ornati. Prima edizione, dedicata a Cosimo de Medici, di un importante trattato cinquecentesco di linguistica e di filologia italiana e di sistemazione grammaticale, di carattere cosmografico, tra i primi della nostra lingua. Assai importante e utile è il vasto indice nei 48 fogli finali. L'opera ebbe grande diffusione e venne ristampata 12 volte nel XVI secolo. In folio piccolo; (34), 263, (1 b.), 17, (1), (1 b.) cc. Bella legatura coeva in piena pergamena semi-floscia. Titolo manoscritto da mano coeva al dorso, in parte sbiadita. Una integrazione di carta all'angolo alto della carta bianca posta all'interno del volume. Alcune carte leggermente ed uniformemente brunite a causa della qualità delle stesse, qualche carta con leggerissimo foxing, ininfluente e nel complesso, esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Antica firma di appartenenza nobiliare alla prima carta bianca che identifica l'esemplare come appartenuto ai Conti Lari di Sarzana. La seconda parte inizia con frontespizio proprio "Vocabolario nuovo del Porcacchi, Sopra molte voci, che per avanti nella Fabbrica erano grandemente deisderate. Le quali sono state estratte. Et cavate dal Giovio, dal Caro, dal Politiano, da Cino da Pistoia, dal Fiorenzuola, et da diversi altri più approvati, et migliori authori della nostra lingua. Con gli essempi à tutte le voci, secondo l'ordine istesso tenuto dall'Alunno". Marca tipografica ai due frontespizi con porta con timpano triangolare e colonne ioniche, al centro S. Importante edizione, aumentata e corretta, del celebre grammatico, lessicografo e calligrafo ferrarese, Francesco Alunno, pseudonimo di Francesco del Bailo (Ferrara, 1485 Venezia, 1556). Alunno pur avendo passato l'infanzia a Ferrara, visse la giovinezza e la maturità tra Udine e Venezia, tanto da essere citato da Gregorio Amaseo nei suoi "Diari udinesi". Nonostante la lontananza da Ferrara mantenne sempre i contatti con i parenti e con l'ambiente letterario ferrarese tanto da annoverare fra le sue amicizie A. Guarino e B. Ferrino. Profondamente legato ad Udine, qui, insegnò per diverso tempo al ginnasio nel 1503, 1529-32 e 1535 e risulta regolarmente stipendiato come maestro di aritmetica, abachista e calligrafo. Per capire il profondo legame che lo legava alla città friulana basta citare il modo come ad essa si riferisce, proprio qui nella "Fabrica del Mondo" dove scrive "meno cara che la natia patria Ferrara, imperciò che potrei quasi con verità dire di aver fatto in essa tanto di profitto quanto in me si ritrova e sì nell'arte dello scrivere e dell'arithmetica come nella lingua volgare et in altre facultati quali per hora lasciamo". A Udine frequentò diverse personalità come Eustachio Celebrino, famoso calligrafo (visse a Udine fino al 1510) e Niccolò Liburnio. Dopo Udine si stabilì a Venezia, dove collaborò con l'industria tipografica, sembra, non solo come autore e revisore di opere sue ma anche come disegnatore e incisore dii punzoni per le stampe corsive della tipografia F. Marcolini. A Venezia pubblica alcune delle sue opere più importanti ed in particolare l'opera sua più ambiziosa, La Fabrica del Mondo, appunto, edita per la prima volta nel 1548. L'opera è un ambizioso progetto di registrare tutte le voci di Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio e di altri buoni autori, mediante le quali, come dice lo stesso Alunno nella sua opera "si possono scrivendo esprimere tutti i concetti dell'huomo di qualunque cosa creata". L'opera è considerata il primo vocabolario metodico della lingua italiana. Diviso in dieci sezioni, Dio, cielo, mondo, elementi, anima, corpo, uomo, qualità, quantità, inferno, l'autore, basandosi sull'autorità delle fonti e sul proprio giudizio per cercare di catalogare tutte le voci in grado di illustrare tutto lo scibile umano. In fondo al volume, con frontespizio proprio, è aggiunto il celebre Vocabolario del noto letterato e storico, nato a Castiglion Fiorentino (AR) nel 1530 e morto a Venezia nel 1585, Tommaso Porcacchi, autore di opere poetiche, storiche e geografiche e curatore per Gabriel Giolito de' Ferrari della stampa di una collana di autori greci da lui stesso in parte volgarizzati. The vocabulary, preceded by an extensive index, is divided into ten books, which are arranged according to a traditional theological worldview. They include (in order): God, heaven, the world, the elements of nature, the soul, the body, mankind, qualities, quantities, and hell. Each entry provides a concise definition of a word, accompanied by synonyms, quotations from literary sources, and examples of usage. The present edition is among the earliest to include the supplement by Porcacchi.With a contemporary ownership annotation on the first flyleaf ("Ex Libris Raphaelis Paulini Florentini"), and a faded stamp, occasional contemporary annotations in the margins.
