Overview: This is a charming and historically significant Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) by Alphonse Paillet, one of the most prominent French…lawyers of the 19th century and the lead defense attorney in the globally sensational Madame Lafarge murder trial. He writes to his young son, Eugène Paillet, who is away studying at the Favard Institution in Paris. Written mostly in French, the letter provides fatherly advice on schooling, mentions a recent trip to Belleau, and notes that a busy court schedule ("l'audience") prevents him from writing a longer translation. Paillet concludes the letter in perfect English to practice with his son. Later pencil annotations by a collector at the bottom confirm the sender's identity as "the famous defender of Madame Lafarge." Historical Significance & The Madame Lafarge Arsenic Trial (Seller Points): Alphonse Paillet (1796-1855): A highly esteemed Parisian lawyer (avocat) who reached the absolute pinnacle of his profession. He is most historically remembered as the lead defense attorney for Marie Lafarge in 1840. The Trial of the Century: Marie Lafarge was accused of murdering her husband, Charles Lafarge, with arsenic just a year after they were married. As she awaited trial, she became a massive cause célèbre that completely divided the French public, receiving over 6,000 letters of support. Her family secured the services of Alphonse Paillet, recognized as the best lawyer in Paris, to lead her defense. A Landmark in Forensic Science: This trial made global history as one of the first times direct forensic toxicology was utilized to secure a conviction in a court of law. During the trial, Paillet's defense team called upon the famous toxicologist Mateu Orfila to confirm the lack of arsenic in the body using the newly invented "Marsh test". In a spectacular courtroom twist, Orfila took the stand and declared that he had indeed found arsenic using the device, sealing Lafarge's fate to a life sentence. Eugène Paillet (1829-1901): The recipient of this letter grew up to become a highly prominent French magistrate and one of the most celebrated book collectors and bibliophiles of the late 19th century. His personal library of rare books and bindings was legendary in Parisian literary circles.
