Starting in 1870, he contributed to L'Assiette au Beurre, Le Rire, La Chronique Amusante and other humorous weeklies from Paris. He has illustrated the stories of colonel Ramollot, and was the main illustrator of Le Chambard Socialiste, together with Steinlen. He also drew for the Images d'Épinal prints of publisher Pellerin." A landmark study of the language of the Gilbert Islands (a chain of atolls and coral islands in the Pacific Ocean, the main part of the country of Kiribati), now called Gilbertese of Kiribati. Alphones Colomb, the author, was a French priest in Tahiti who wrote the book from a manuscript by Latium Leveque. Father Leveque named the Gilbertese Arorai (from Arorae, an atoll in the group of islands.) The book sets out the grammatical rules of the language and provides Arorai-English and English Arorai vocabularies.
