Dekorative Darstellung der Silbenschriften der japanischen Sprachen in 3 Spalten. Dargestellt sind die Schriften Hiragana (hier: Firo-Canna"), Katagana ("Catta Canna" und "Jmatto-Canna" aus der Abteilung "Caractères et Alphabetes de Langues mortes et vivantes" des Neudrucks von Diderots und d'Alemberts Enzyklopädie. Die aufgeführte Silbenschrift "Jmatto-Canna" gibt es in Wirklichkeit nicht. Sie beruht auf einem Irrtum des berühmten Japanreisenden Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716). Es gibt aber tatsächlich eine dritte Silbenschrift ("Kanji"), die auf chinesischen Schriftzeichen beruht. - Falzspur mittig quer zum Blatt, rückseitig gebräunt, sonst gut erhalten.

A learned study of the origins of alphabets relating especially to ancient Hebrew, Phoenician, Greek and Egyptian, published by the author in a series of researches on Hebrew-Egyptian archaeology. Saalschütz (1801-63), German Rabbi, a noted scholar and pioneer in Hebrew archaeology, was first professor of Jewish theology at Königsberg, East Prussia, and a member of the Historical-Theological Society at Leipzig.

The 25 plates from Diderot's "Encyclopédie" showing the "Characters and Alphabets of Dead and Living Languages", including Arabic, Ethiopian, Coptic and several other alphabets. Letterforms are shown in a variety of majuscules and cursives. - Upper spine-end chipped, otherwise fine. - Old handwritten ownership on verso of first plate, partially in Greek: "ek ton biblon tou Fl. Lécluse / 1806" (i.e., Fleury de Lécluse, 1774-1845, professor of Greek and Hebrew and scholar of the Basque language). Removed from the library of the Ducs de Luynes at the Château de Dampierre: their bookplate reproducing the arms of Charles Marie d'Albert de Luynes (1783-1839), 7th Duc de Luynes, on pastedown. - PMM 200. Second Edition. 12mo Lower board detached and upper board virtually so, spine partly missing, some soiling to the boards but internally a very nice, clean copy of this fragile publication Very rare: none on OCLC, one undated on COPAC, which must presumably be the first edition of c.1820. According to the advertisement this edition includes a good deal of additional material. The pagination would indicate that a leaf is missing but the first and last signatures each consist of five leaves and we are convinced that there is no lacuna. The engravings are exceptionally charming. Original quarter leather, yellow printed boards, the upper board with wood-engraving.
