Circa 1890, 8vo, 200 x 150mm, 8 x 6 inches, rag book, upper cover illustrated red and black showing mother watching child taking first steps, a poem printed on lower cover, (14) pages including insides of covers. 4 ABC letters per page, each with 2 black and white images: "A arm, anvil; E egg, ear, eye; W wolf, whip". The ABC is followed by 15 simple reading lessons with vignette illustrations. Covers slightly soiled and darkened, neat name in top margin of upper cover, lower corners dog-eared, edges very slightly frayed, a couple of small light stains on final page. A good plus copy. First Edition. One of an edition of 100 numbered copies Miniature Fine copy The book comprises a full alphabet, with one letter to a page. The book was handset using Cheltenham and Tempo and printed by Micah Slawinski-Currier and Shane Paradis. Full blue cloth binding.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Boston: Crosby, Nichols, Lee & Company, 1860. Undated [1860]. Worn but sound ABC book with a short verse, four-line verse and animal woodcut for each letter in the alphabet. Includes some animals not typically found in such books: "N is a Nyl Ghau, Half ox and half deer; On the far plains of Hindostan, He roams without fear"; "J is a Jaguar, A Brazilian beast; On the flesh of wild deer He loves well to feast"; "P is a Prongbuck, On the western plain, He flies o'er the ground, Like a ship on the main"; and our favorite "V is a Vampire, A bloodsucking bat. He's as large as a pigeon And bites like a rat". Red blindstamped cloth with gilt lettered and decorated spine with Young People's Library at the top, includes woodcut frontis and title page in addition to the animal woodcuts, plus four additional title pages with three frontis woodcuts for different titles at the rear, all dated 1860, presumably publisher's ads. Covers worn with light fraying to corners and spine ends, finger soil, good hinges, sound text block, occasional finger soil and a couple of very minor margins stains to the pages, gift notation in pencil dated 1864 on front free endpaper. Duodecimo, [28] pages with numerous illustrations printed in four colours. Colour-pictorial card covers slightly rubbed; small amount of red pencil scribble on the outside rear cover (and some slight and inoffensive red colouring-in to the figures on the front cover); a very good copy (internally fine). A charming pictorial alphabet book advertising country pleasure outings by public transport in the vicinity of London. The illustrations show two children and their aunt on such an outing, with all figures stylised as wooden toys. The alphabet begins 'A is for Auntie, who's so fond of Us; | That she takes us for rides on the top of the Bus', and continues with rhyming couplets in a similar vein. The letterpress text gives details of return fares to Eastcote, Horsenden Hill, Ickenham, Ruislip, Southend, South Harrow, and Uxbridge, together with details of tea rooms and resorts at those destinations. The catalogue record for an example held by the London Transport Museum (1997/13265) attributes the illustrations to Violet Holdsworth. We have traced very few institutional holdings. 'Reg. No. 108-10M-5.4.23' is printed on the recto of the rear cover; we read this as indicating a print-run of 10,000 copies.…
