Half Bound Leather. Zustand: Good. Alonzo Chappel and Thomas Nast (illustrator). First Edition. Black leather and green, pebbled cloth. Pink endpapers. Steel engravings. Marbling on the text block ends has mostly faded, and the text block ends have darkened. Vol. 1: 620 pages; 38 chapters; ends of back joint appear to have been split and repaired; the front board has 4 water stains; a fourth of the back board has a stain; an owner's name is on the front pastedown; broken hinges are repaired with cloth, hinge tape; most of the bottom, front corner of the text block has water stain, which runs onto the pages, up to 3 1/2 in. Vol. 2: 660 pages; chapters 39-79; the bottom edge of the spine strip is missing; endpapers are split over the cord hinges; the last 52 pages have water stain on the bottom margins; 45 pages have water stain on the top corner; 14 pages have water stain on the inside margin; a large chip on an inside margin is repaired with document repair tape. Vol. 3: 642 pages; chapters 80-115; the cloth has 8 faded spots, up to a linear 1 3/4 in.; the broken front hinge is repaired with cloth, hinge tape; the back endpaper is split over the cord hinges; 2 pages each have a chipped corner. All volumes have sparse, other stains, tiny chips, and closed tears. Extra shipping cost required. Photos e-mailed upon request.

Historical portrait steel engraving on heavy stock cotton fiber paper from 1866 of John Anthony Quitman (1798-1858) from the oil painting created by the 19th-century American artist, Alonzo Chappel. John Anthony Quitman, an American politician and military leader who served as a Major General during the Mexican-American War and as the 15th Governor of Mississippi. Artist: Alonzo Chappel (1828-1887), a prolific painter known for his historical portraits and scenes of the American Revolution and Civil War eras. Quitman was a prominent figure in the Mexican-American War, notably leading troops during the Battle of Chapultepec and becoming the first U.S. military governor of Mexico City after its capture. Chappel's portraits often captured the dignified and heroic persona of such military figures for the American public.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Alonzo Chappel (illustrator). First Edition. 43 of the 46 volumes which were bound together into a set in 1857. They are lg. 4to softcovers, magazine-style. This must have been frustrating to read as a serial; the volumes often end and again begin in mid-sentence. Each has a full-page engraving by Chappel, including some of his most famous work. The missing volumes are #s 1, 2 and 46. The remainder are overall in vg condition; the cover of vol. 3 once came loose (is now reattached) but most appear untouched.
