Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Built on the premise that trust is one of the most important factors in intergroup relations, conflict management and resolution at large, this volume explores trust and its mechanisms and operations especially in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Significantly, this volume focuses not only on the nature of trust and distrust in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but it also explores how it is possible to build and increase trust on both sides in the conflict, a necessity in order to advance the stalled peace process. As trust is a concept that is interdisciplinary by nature, so are this volume's contributors: sociologists, philosophers, sociologists, social psychologists, political scientists, as well as experts in the Middle East, Islam, Judaism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict bring together real multidisciplinary perspectives that complement each other and then provide a comprehensive picture about the nature of trust and distrust and its ramification and implications for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Divided into five thematic parts, the volume begins with by examining the theoretical basis of trust research from multiple perspectives. Then, it presents chapters on trust, distrust, and trust-building in other conflicts around the world. The third part is a unique feature of this volume as it takes a contextual approach: it emphasizes the importance of particular cultural and religious considerations on both sides of the conflict. The thrust of the book is examined in the next section. Part IV discusses and analyses various aspects of trust, and specifically distrust, in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Significantly, the chapters of this part take the perspectives of the participants in the conflict: Israeli Jews, Palestinians and Israeli Arabs. Finally, the volume concludes by providing an integrative conceptual perspective based on the principles of social andpolitical psychology. An important goal of this volume is to not only explore trust and distrust in an intractable conflict, but also to provide practical multi-disciplinary outlooks and implications to advance trust building in two conflict ridden societies-Israeli and Palestinian, and other societies around the world.

Hardcover. Zustand: NEAR FINE. cxxxiv, 532 (Arabic text); 539-1042 (English trans.). Complete in two volumes. Large 8vo's. Sewn bindings in black cloth-effect paper over boards with gilt stamped lettering. Some trivial shelfwear to the covers, both volumes entirely clean and sharp otherwise with tight bindings. Al-Farabi (d. 950 A.D.), arguably the most original and influential Muslim philosopher of the Middle Ages, wrote on subjects as diverse as music, medicine, and political theory, as well as logic, language and grammar, religion and metaphysics. The present work compares the Arabic terminology of Al-Farabi with that of his predecessors, by using their own sets of definitions. An English translation is also provided in a separate volume. Wherever possible, Greek parallel terminology is provided, together with the Hebrew and Latin terminologies used in the mediaeval translations of Al-Farabi's works. The work's two volumes include detailed indices, a detailed bibliography of the philosopher, and an interpretative essay.

Paperback. Zustand: NEAR FINE. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. SIGNED and inscribed by the author in Hebrew on the title page to fellow scholar of Jewish and Islamic philosophy, Joel Kraemer. Max Schloessinger Memorial Series: Texts, 8. 207pp (English); 207pp (Arabic). Perfectbound in printed wraps with dust jacket. Very clean, sharp copy; DJ with a bit or rubbing to the extremities. From the DJ flap: 'Socrates, a universal cultural figure, was adopted by Islamic culture in the Middle Ages. In Islamic writings he was cited in support of various arguments in religious debates. The characteristics attributed to him in Islamic culture are mainly in the realm of ethics. Nevertheless, he was also a sort of proto-Muslim sage, though only infrequently was he portrayed as a systematic rationalist philosopher. His wisdom was recorded in medieval Islamic literature in the form of sayings or description of behavior, in a style very reminiscent of hadith. The Arab Socrates is thus different from other philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, who were seen as systematic philosophers, probably due to their writings that were translated into Arabic. For these and other reasons the figure of Socrates struck a chord among Muslims of different strata: some saw him as a prophet or a sort of prophet, some as an infidel, others as an ethical figure, and still others as a sage par excellence. Among the more important issues in the legacy of the Arab Socrates (who was sometimes confused with Diogenes) was his encounter with the king and his trial and death on the one hand, and his views on God, this world, life and death, speech and silence, and wisdom and stupidity, on the other. The book contains some 900 items of information culled from various philosophical, historical, literary, and theological Arabic sources. The material is organized in two main sections, biography and teachings, and is accompanied by footnotes, indices, and a detailed critical apparatus. This book complements another study by the author, Socrates in Mediaeval Arabic Literature, published by Magnes and Brill in 1991.'.
