Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Zustand: VERY GOOD. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Sewn binding in blue cloth, gilt spine lettering. Ex-library with external labels removed; exceedingly clean and sharp with sound binding and no evidence of use. Shipped professionally in a box. 'The Coming of the King James Gospels is a primary publication exploring the handwritten annotations of the Oxford New Testament Company, made as members completed Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Their original edited pages, gathered into one binding as the Bodleian Bishops' Bible ([1602] b.1), offer us the only known surviving record of their monumental work. Ward Allen's painstakingly produced collation of this Bishops' Bible is available for the first time in accessible visual layout. It allows a reader to study simultaneously the three texts, that of the original Bishops' Bible, the revisions suggested for the 1602 text, and the final King James version of the Gospels. The Coming of the King James Gospels, with Ed Jacobs's analysis of the revisions in the Bishops' Bible, makes it possible to trace the progress through the three distinct stages of the translators' work. Rejected readings reveal the reasoning which led to the wording of the final text. Beautifully produced, The Coming of the King James Gospels is now a prime resource for all students of the Bible and the English language.' (Publisher's blurb).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Octavo, pp. [vi], 282. Illustrated with full-page wood engravings from designs by eminent artists. Signed & Inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front flyleaf: "To Charles Churchill Osborne - with Mrs. S. C. Hall's best wishes and kind regards - Anna Maria Hall. 1875." Provenance & Association:The recipient, Charles Churchill Osborne (1859-1944), was a notable Victorian literary figure and journalist who served as the private secretary to Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts. He is best remembered as the editor of The Letters of Charles Dickens to the Baroness Burdett-Coutts (published 1931).This presentation inscription creates a fascinating literary bridge: Anna Maria Hall was one of the most prominent Irish women writers of the 19th century, while Osborne operated at the heart of the Charles Dickens circle. Ironically, Dickens famously based his unflattering caricature of the hypocritical Mr. Pecksniff (in Martin Chuzzlewit) on Anna Maria's husband, Samuel Carter Hall—a literary connection that Osborne himself later documented in his biographical writings. The book is in very good condition Lovely embossed gold and lilac cloth cover. Firmly bound. All illustrations present. Only very limited spotting on first few pages. First edition 1875 signed.
