In den WarenkorbSin Encuadernar. Zustand: Muy bien. Large original engraved map with fine original colour.116 x 53 cms including the explanatory tables at both sides. The map preserves it freshness and beauty. Carel Allards British Isles map is one of the most striking of its time, with two richly decorated and symbolic cartouches. To the right, the title panel is surrounded by twin likenesses of William III and his wife Mary against a background of the accoutrements of war. The map may well have been prepared shortly after their accension to the English throne in 1689 when Anglo-Dutch ties were particularly close. The coats of armes above the portraits is still in Stuart form; below, there is an eleborate anagram of W and M, and the figures of Neptune and his attendants. To the left a sunlit orb is encircled by the garter, with supporters representing the four continents. Two vignettes of naval engagements are engraved in the lower part of the map. Extremely rare map with the explanatory tables in old colour. In this condition rare to find in the market.…

In den WarenkorbDominii Groningae nec non maximae partis Drentae [The territory of Groningen, together with the greater part of Drenthe]. With an inset map of the islands in the Wadden Sea: "Caerte van de Groeninger Eylanden ende Watte" [Chart of the Groningen Islands and the Wadden]. Copper engraving made by Carel Allard in 1697. With original hand colouring. Size: 47 x 56 cm. The map is described as "novissima delineato" [newly drawn], but is in fact an accurate copy of a map that Nicolaes Visscher brought to market in 1664, which was itself based on a map by Frederik de Wit from 1663. Each edition of the map does, however, feature a different cartouche. Allard's cartouche depicts an elaborate scene with the double-headed eagle from the coat of arms of Groningen alongside the products of the land (peat, cheese, honey, livestock), as well as a cornucopia being emptied by a putto. Following the Siege of Groningen in 1594, by which the city joined the Dutch Republic , the city and the Ommelanden [surrounding lands] together formed the province of Stad en Lande. In the second half of the seventeenth century, this political union was still relatively young and not without tensions: the city of Groningen retained a dominant position over the Ommelanden, which regularly led to conflicts over governance, jurisdiction and taxation. These power relations are implicitly encoded in the cartographic image, in which the city is prominently depicted as the central hub. At the same time, Groningen served a pronounced strategic function as the northern border province of the Republic. Its proximity to the Prince-Bishopric of Münster and East Frisia made the region vulnerable to invasion. This was demonstrated most dramatically during the notorious Disaster Year of 1672, when the Bishop of Münster, Christoph Bernhard von Galen ("Bommen Berend"), besieged Groningen. The city held out, after which its fortifications were further strengthened and the surrounding landscape organised along military lines. The numerous redoubts, lines and waterworks visible on the map form part of this defensive system. In economic terms, the landscape was profoundly transformed during this period by the systematic extraction of peat. Large parts of the south-east of the province and adjacent Drenthe were exploited for peat extraction, an essential fuel for the urban economy of Holland. The straight canals and drainage channels cutting through the peat district clearly recognisable on the map as a geometric network served both for the transport of peat and for drainage and colonisation. New settlements arose along these canals, leading to a gradual transition from a medieval cultural landscape to a planned and rationally organised agrarian one. Price: Euro 650,-.…

In den Warenkorb"XVII Provinciarum Belgicarum. Sive Germaniae Inferioris. Typus novissimus & accuratissimus." [The Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands, or Lower Germany. The newest and most accurate map.] Copper engraving made by Carel Allard in 1675, here in a third state dating to around 1696. Contemporary hand colouring, beautifully heightened with gold. Size: 46.5 × 56 cm. This richly decorated map depicts the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands, the political entity that had been united in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries under Burgundian and later Habsburg rule. The region comprised the present-day Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and adjacent parts of northern France and western Germany. Although the northern and southern provinces became politically separated after the Revolt against Spain, the concept of the XVII Provinces remained a powerful historical and geographical framework in cartography. The map is oriented with the west at the top and shows the dense network of cities, towns, rivers, and waterways that characterized the landscape of the Low Countries. The provinces are distinguished by different colours. In the north we recognize Holland, Zeeland, Friesland, Groningen, Overijssel, the Bishopric of Utrecht, and the County of Zutphen, while in the south lie the Spanish Netherlands, including Brabant, Flanders, Hainaut, Artois, Namur, Limburg, and Luxembourg. The map was published by Carel Allard (16481709), a member of a well-known Amsterdam family of publishers and engravers. The Allards specialized in decorative maps and atlases that built heavily upon the cartographic material of earlier publishers such as Blaeu, Janssonius, and Visscher. The present map belongs to a tradition of maps of the Seventeen Provinces that dates back to the sixteenth century, but Allard gave the sheet a distinctly Baroque decoration, with elaborate allegorical figures and cartouches. The cartouches illustrate the political and economic strength of the Netherlands. In the title cartouche stands Mars, the Roman god of war, holding a banner inscribed "Pro Libertate." He symbolizes the military vigilance with which the country's freedom is defended. Beside him appears a city maiden with the Dutch lion, personifying the state and the provincial community of the Netherlands. At the bottom we see Mercury, the god of commerce and travellers, next to a river god. Together they refer to the prosperity derived from shipping, trade, and the country's important waterways. The legend cartouche on the left emphasizes this economic and cartographic reputation. At the top Feme blows her trumpet to proclaim the fame of the Netherlands, flanked by two putti. Below are depicted surveyors, a merchant surrounded by goods, and a fisherman with a richly filled basket, referring respectively to precise land surveying, international trade, and the fisheries that formed an important foundation of the prosperity of the Low Countries in the seventeenth century. Literature: Hans Spikmans "Germania Inferior, cartobibliografie van de Zeventien Provinciën der Nederlanden 1548-1831", map no. 150-3 Price: Euro 1.250,-.…

In den WarenkorbNORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD "Recentissima Novi Orbis Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula". Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Carolus Allard c. 1697. Original hand colouring, heightened with gold. Rare map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. The cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind's eternal search for gold. Allard's map includes one of the boldest depictions of the myth of Terra Esonis, a land bridge extending from Japan to the Straits of Anian, here with over a dozen place names and only a small strait on either side. We see a beautiful example of California as an Island, based upon Nicholas Sanson's second projection. The open ended Great Lakes and primitive early treatment of the Mississippi River are also noteworthy, as is the early Rio Colorado, extending to a lake in Apachas and Navaio regions of the Southwest, and mistakenly referencing Taos and Xila, indicating a confusion with the Rio Grande regarding the Taos reference. The interior of South America includes tribal vignettes in Brazil and a misprojected, overly wide projection of the continent. An further interesting aspect of the map is the depiction of early Australia. Quiri Regio, the Northern parts of what would become Australia, are also well delineated, showing what would become Carpentaria, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arnhem Land. A massive island of Isabella appears above Australia. Several early place names and islands are also shown. The map of America by Allard is derived from that of Frederick de Wit, c. 1675.
