The magazine had 14 issues and was published from January 1968 to July 1971. From January, 1968, through July, 1971, Ginzburg published Avant Garde. While it could not be termed obscene, it was filled with creative imagery often caustically critical of American society and government, sexual themes, and (for the time) crude language.Avant Garde had a modest circulation but was extremely popular in certain circles, including New York's advertising and editorial art directors. Herbert F. Lubalin (1918-1981), a post-modern design guru, was Ginzburg's collaborator on his four best-known magazines, including Avant Garde, which gave birth to a well-known typeface of the same name. It was originally intended primarily for use in logos: the first version consisted solely of 26 capital letters. It was inspired by Ginzburg and his wife, designed by Lubalin, and realized by Lubalin's assistants and Tom Carnese, one of Lubalin's partners. It is characterized by geometrically perfect round strokes; short, straight lines; and an extremely large number of kerned ligatures. The 1941 versio…n of "The Black Cat" is neither a remake of Edgar G. Ulmer's 1934 Karloff-Lugosi film of the same name, nor does it bear much relation to the Edgar Allan Poe story (though, in fairness, neither did the 1934 version). It is more of a horror-comedy affair than its predecessor, with Broderick Crawford and Hugh Herbert in the lead, Bela Lugosi reappearing (now in the more minor role of "Eduardo"), and Basil Rathbone ably handling the part of the shady Mr. Hartley. Shot by the legendary Stanley Cortez of "Magnificent Ambersons" fame. (Hal Erickson, Rovi) Gray titled wrappers, rubber-stamped copy No. 6856, dated February 15, 1941. 117 leaves, with last page of text numbered 117. Mimeograph duplication. A bound volume of different 'Lady's' magazines, containing the bound volume of July through December 1843 of the Ladie's National Magazine, as well as various single issues of Godey's Lady's…Book (March 1844 and February 1845) and Graham's Magazine (January and November of 1844). These are not bound consecutively but appear after volume IV of the Ladies' National Magazine. With various plates, including several color fashion plates included with the Ladies' Magazine and Godey's Book. NO original wraps or ads included with any issue. Two plates MISSING from the Ladies' National Magazine, although all fashion plates are present, some misbound. 3 fashion plates not colored although indicated that they should be in the contents. Of note in the various volumes is 'The Thousand-and-Second Tale of Scheherazade,' by Edgar Allan Poe (Godey's Lady's Book, February 1845); "The Lady's Yes" by Elizabeth B. Barrett (Browning) [Graham's Magazine January 1844]; 'Terpsichore' by Oliver Wendell Holmes in the same issue; and a poem by Henry William Herbert. The November 1844 issue of Graham's contains a brief article on an Elkhorn Pyramid on the Upper Missouri, with a plate included. With fashion plates included for the various Godey's Lady's Books. POOR/FAIR condition. Leather backstrip effectively DETACHED, with the lower 3 inches MISSING. Covers very weakly attached. The first few leaves of the book tenuously hanging on by a thread. Two leaves of illustrations DETACHED and laid in at the middle of the book. Moderate scuffing and general fading to the boards, with some soiling. Extremities scuffed and worn. Scattered foxing, soiling and staining throughout the interior, moderate to heavy in a few places. Text block shaken but intact, except for the above noted sections.
