Stories of ordinary people who touched something true about the world in the middle of their everyday lives.Told in the timeless voice of fireside storytelling, these four tales carry a single message: the marvelous is not the exception. 4to. 22 pp., final blank. With woodcut device on title page and one initial. Red modern cloth with giltstamped spine title. First edition of the peace treaty between the Netherlands and Algiers on 23 November 1757 (or 12 Rabi' al-awwal of the year 1171, the Prophet's birthday), which ended a war that had lasted since 1755. After the War of Spanish Succession had left the Dutch navy neglected and their merchant fleet large and vulnerable, the corsairs of the Barbary states had begun a series of attacks on Dutch ships. Already the only major naval power to pay tribute to Algiers (under a 1679 treaty), the Netherlands increased their payments to bring about by diplomacy the peace they were unable to enforce by military means. While Algiers had agreed to the peace in 1726 (and the Dutch made new treaties with Tunis and Tripoli), relationships remained tense. The Netherlands were required to send large annual amounts of gunpowder, arms, and naval stores, and "occasionally, if the demands of the Barbary corsairs became too excessive, the Dutch would fight back. They were at war with Algiers from 1755 to 1757 and 1792 to 1793, and with Tripoli from 1789 to 1791. However, in the end peace would once more be concluded. Payment of tribute was always cheaper than maintaining a naval squadron in the Mediterranean for years on end" (Jamieson, Lords of the Sea: A History of the Barbary Corsairs [2012], p. 179). - The present copy is a new issue with an added final leaf (and blank leaf) containing three additional articles appended in 1760.…

35 × 44 cm. Lithograph showing the plan of attack and a view of the fortifications on the mole at Algiers. Contemporary hand-coloured lithographed plate with the plan for the Bombardment of Algiers in August 1816. The attack was instigated and won by Great Britain and the Netherlands, which was celebrated in London. - The Bombardment of Algiers was part of a European campaign to end piracy against Europeans by North African countries. The goal of this attack was to free Christian slaves in Algeria and stop Omar Agha (d. 1817), the of Dey of Algiers, from enslaving more Europeans. The attack was partly successful (Algeria freed around 3,000 Christian slaves after the battle), but did not stop the enslavement if Europeans until later in the 19th century. - The plan for the attack was made by Admiral Lord Exmouth, the commander of the fleet. The largest ships approached the harbour in a column, sailed to the zone where the Algerian guns could not reach them, and shelled the defences. Other ships blocked the harbour to attack the Algerian ships and prevent them from joining the battle. In the present illustration, each of the British ships is named and drawn in its planned position, thus giving an interesting visual insight into 19th century naval tactics. - The sheet is folded in half, with a tear along the top and bottom of the fold, somewhat browned and stained, with remnants of tape on the back. The plan and view remain clear and the colouring remains bright.…

First edition of the text of a treaty between the States General of the Dutch Republic and the government, or the Dey (or Sultan) of Algiers Baba Ali Chaouche who reigned from 1710-1718 (Dey, from the Turkish honorific title dayi, literally meaning uncle, was the title given to the rulers of the Regency of Algiers, Tripoli, and Tunis under the Ottoman Empire from 1671 onwards). The treaty was concluded on the 18th of June 1712 at Algiers by the Dutch consul general Johan van Baarle (consul 1709-1716), and ratified the 4th of July 1712.The XXII articles of the treaty mirror very interestingly the problems the Dutch merchants trading in the Mediterranean and the (war)ships of the Dutch West India Company protecting their interests, encountered on the northern coasts of Africa: Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. In these articles taxes and imposts are regulated as well as compensations and claims for damages, arrangements in case of deaths, treatment and buying off of (Dutch and European) slaves, and returning of run off slaves. In good condition.l Knuttel 16193. Modern brown wrappers with printed title-label pasted on the front side. With Scheltus's woodcut printer's device on the title-page and with a woodcut initial. Pages: 14, [2] pp.…

Very good. Dissected and mounted on original linen. Size 20 x 26.25 Inches. This is a 1909 Émile Lowe cycling map of the environs of Algiers, Algeria. The map documents the introduction of cycling to colonial Algeria and how, there, as elsewhere, cycling evolved into a popular pastime that encouraged the development of good roads, ultimately paving the way for the automobile age. A Closer Look The map depicts northern Algeria from the Mediterranean Sea to Blida. Cyclable roads with milage are highlighted in red overprinting, while uncyclable roads are marked in black. Cycling in Algeria Bicycles arrived in Algrea sometime in the mid-1880s, when English aristocrats, wintering in Algeria introduced the novel contraption, the velocipede, to Algerian society, instigating a new popular pastime. In subsequent decades, cycling grew in popularity with the French colonial population, and as access to bicycles became more prevalent, immigrant communities and Algerians themselves began to enjoy cycling's social, athletic, and transportation benefits. By 1909, when this map was issued, the Union Vélocipédique Algérienne ran local clubs in Algiers and Oran organized amateur races, time trials, or long-distance rides. Publication History and Census This map was originally drawn by Émile Lowe, engraved by J. Duvert, and published by P. Duvert in Algiers in 1899. Adolphe Jourdan published a 2nd edition in 1907 and a 3rd edition in 1909 (present example). We know of one surviving example of the 1899 edition, which is part of the collection at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. One example of the 1907 edition is cataloged in OCLC at Harvard University. This is the only known surviving example of the 1909 edition.…
