In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. A 'unfiltered' look at Regency London in marvellous aquatints. Description: 2 vols., later (c. 1900) crimson morocco by Tout & Sons, sides and board edges filleted in gilt, raised bands with gilt-ruled rectangles in six comparments on spine and gilt lettering. Red silk endpapers and pastedowns fille…ted in gilt. Octavo: 22 × 14 cm; pp. (vol.1): xii, 619, [1]; (vol.2): xi, 660. With 31 hand-colored aquatint plates (incl. frontispieces) by John Augustus Atkinson, under captioned tissue guards. Top edge gilt. Ref.: Abbey 323; Rossetti 714; VD17 7:692863P Provenance: Bookplate of E.H. Hill to 3rd. flyleaf. Condition: Some minor wear to covers, superficial splits to upper joints. Contents with occasional minor blemish but generally clean. Aquatints in bright colours, with no offsetting. Notes: This work capitalised on the 'Life in London' craze initiated by Pierce Egan's Life in London (1821). While Lord Byron was publishing his own Don Juan in instalments, Thornton produced this alternative narrative to satisfy the public's appetite for 'picaresque' adventures and social satire. The aquatints are characteristic of the period, using a copperplate etching process with tonal washes and hand colouring to depict scenes of high and low life in the British capital. Atkinson, J.A. (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Good Only. A scarce copy of the first edition of Alfred Thornton's retelling of the tale of Don Juan. Illustrated with thirteen coloured plates (collated, missing two). The first volume is satirical, and parodies the Don Juan of Mozart and Byron. Don Juan (Spanish), Don Giovanni (Italian) is a legendary, fictio…nal libertine whose story has been told many times by many authors. El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra (The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest) by Tirso de Molina is a play set in the fourteenth century that was published in Spain around 1630. Evidence suggests it is the first written version of the Don Juan legend. Although the various iterations of the Don Juan myth show some variation, the basic storyline remains the same. Starting with Tirso's work, Don Juan is portrayed as a wealthy, seductive libertine who devotes his life to seducing women, taking great pride in his ability to seduce women of all ages and stations in life. His life is also punctuated with violence and gambling, and in many interpretations (Tirso, Espronceda, Zorrilla), he kills Don Gonzalo, the father of a girl he has seduced, Doña Ana. This leads to the famous last supper scene, whereby Don Juan invites the dead father to dinner. One volume of two only. In a contemporary diced calf binding. Externally, rubbed, with some bumping, and wear to the head and tail of the spine. Some ink spills to the boards also. Front hinge has failed, and rear hinge is very tender. Front endpapers missing. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Pages are bright, though with some scattered instances of foxing, and some handling marks. Good Only. None (illustrator). book.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of Thornton's satirical reinterpretation of the famous libertine legend. Octavo, two volumes bound in full crushed levant morocco by Lloyd with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt scrolling and cornerpieces to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner den…telles stamp-signed by Lloyd, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, illustrated with Âthirty-one hand-colored aquatint plates by Atkinson including frontispieces. "The first volume is a parody of Mozart's and Byron's "Don Juan", the second an imitation of Egan's "Life in London." In near fine condition, bookplate. A rare work in an exquisite binding. A satirical reinterpretation of the famous libertine legend, Alfred Thorntonâs Don Juan presents the widely referenced character in a humorous and irreverent light. Unlike the more serious and philosophical portrayal found in Byronâs version, Thorntonâs Don Juan is a playful figure used to mock the social and political conventions of early 19th-century Britain.
