In 1936, George Patton was a lieutenant colonel serving in staff and training roles in Hawaii. He did not command combat troops but worked on tactical doctrine while continuing to advocate for armored warfare. A decorated WWI veteran, he was regarded as talented but abrasive, with his career slowed by the Army's small size and resistance to innovation during the interwar years.
