Dark cherry red cloth backed boards, lightly rubbed and faded. In other respects a very good copy. Alfred Barratt (1844 1881) was an English barrister and philosopher, born in Manchester. He was a prodigious child he learnt basic Hebrew, Arabic, and Persian aged twelve. In 1862, Barratt entered Balliol College, Oxford, and became a scholar in his first term. He graduated with a double first in moderations and a first-class in the classics, maths, law, and modern history schools, in 1866. This meant he achieved the considerable distinction of five first classes. Physical Ethics is his first book, it was received with much acclaim especially as he was only twenty four years of age. ha left an unfinished work Physical Metempiric which was published posthumously.
