"THERE appears to have been prevalent during past decades a rather general opinion among physicians that anatomy and histology are sciences in which further progress is not to be expected, since there are no more problems to be solved. However, there are indications that during recent years conceptions have been undergoing a change. There is little doubt that the chief factor responsible for this change is the great progress made in physiology and biochemistry, which has made clear that there are still many important gaps in our knowledge of the structures which subserve the observed functional phenomena. More than in any other field, this seems to be the case with regard to the nervous system. Modern electro-physiological techniques have made it possible for the neurophysiologist to register minute electrical alterations occurring in a few and sometimes even in single nerve fibres and to stimulate limited areas of nervous tissue. By these methods, hitherto unknown, functional interrelations between various parts of the nervous system have been demonstrated. We have very good reason to believe that the numerous impulses which at any time circulate in the nervous system do so along nerve fibres or bundles of such fibres, and that the course taken by the nervous impulses is determined by the anatomical organisation of the nervous system. However, those nervous interconnections which are known to-day are not sufficient, or not known in sufficient detail, to account for many of the recently observed functional phenomena. In addition to knowledge of interconnections between nervous centres, information about other structural features is also asked for, e.g., the numbers of cells and fibres in nuclei and tracts, the thickness of fibres establishing the connection between two parts ; and last, but not least, the question of how the nerve cells establish contact with each other will frequently be of decisive importance." Brodal Alf Brodal (1910-1988) was a Norwegian professor of anatomy. He was a specialist in neuroanatomy, and was particularly interested in the cerebellum, the reticular substance and the vestibular nuclei. He worked closely with Jan Birger Jansen.

In einem stetig rascheren Tempo erscheinen neue Beobachtungen und Befunde, welche Änderungen unserer altbewährten Auffassungen nötig machen. Unter diesen Umständen ist es streng genommen unmöglich, eine gänzlich erschöpfende und zeitgemäße Darstellung unseres Wissens auf einem Gebiet wie dem des Kleinhirns zu geben. Wir be fürchten deshalb, daß es zum Thema gehörige Arbeiten geben mag, die wirtrotz allen Suchens übersehen haben. Jedoch hoffen wir, daß alle wichtigeren Beiträge zum Thema Berücksichtigung gefunden haben. In unserer Darstellung haben wir soweit als möglich versucht, funktionelle Gesichtspunkte anzulegen, und wir haben uns bemüht, einander widersprechende Befunde kritisch zu beurteilen. Da bekanntlich jedes Urteil notwendigerweise bis zu einem gewissen Grade subjektiv gefärbt ist, sind wir uns darüber im klaren, daß andere Forscher unsere Ansichten vielleicht in einigen Punkten nicht teilen werden.
