Ouvrage illustré d'un frontispice lithographié en deux teintes et de 20 lithographies teintées hors-texte par Trayer et Émile Beau d'après les dessins de l'auteur. Reliure en demi chagrin vert, dos lisse orné de doubles filets dorés ainsi que de larges filets à froid, plats de cartonnage vert foncé, petites restaurations et frottements en têtes et en pieds des mors, gardes et contreplats de papier à la cuve, reliure de l'époque. Quelques épidermures et très fines piqûres intérieures, sinon agréable exemplaire établi en reliure de l'époque. Le prince Alexeï Soltykoff (1806-1859), issu des plus grandes familles de Russie, avait été envoyé en mission diplomatique à Téhéran en 1838, sous le règne de Muhammad shah. Il passa près d'un an dans le pays. Mais n'ayant aucune vocation pour la carrière diplomatique, il l'abandonna peu après son retour pour s'installer à Paris et préparer ses voyages en Inde. Personnage original, voire excentrique, animé depuis l'enfance par la passion des voyages, le prince Soltykoff rêvait depuis toujours d'un Orient dont cette mission avait été l'occasion. Arrivé par le Caucase, il vécut jusqu'en mai 1839 à Téhéran qu'il put à loisir observer et décrire à travers le mode de vie de ses habitants. He spent nearly a year in Persia. Having no real calling for diplomacy, he abandoned the career soon after his return and settled in Paris to prepare for further travels in India.A singular and even eccentric figure, Soltykoff had been fascinated with travel since childhood, and this mission provided him with his long-awaited opportunity to explore the Orient. Arriving via the Caucasus, he remained in Tehran until May 1839, which he observed and described extensively, particularly through the everyday lives of its inhabitants. Prince Aleksei Dmitrievich Saltykov (Alexis Soltykoff) (1806?1859) was a Russian artist and traveller in Persia and India. After a relatively brief career in the Russian diplomatic services, Soltykoff moved to Paris in 1840, where he planned his voyages to India and Persia. More common is Soltykoff?s travelogue of India, containing lithographs after his drawings of scenes and people observed during his travels there.
