The text includes an essay by Goffman, a preface by Alexander Lee Nyerges, executive director of the museum, and a biographical text by Liliclaire C. McKinnon.

Written in dialect and positively reviewed at the time of its publication (the NY Times review described it as a story of "Negroes torn between their loyalty to their feudal lord, their love of the slow-going ways of life on the plantation, and the inducements held out to them by friends who have gone North to Harlem . . by a Southern woman whose personal affection for unlettered, plantation Negroes is as apparent as her intimate knowledge of them."), it is now mainly appreciated for its Rockwell Kent illustrations - which included endpapers, frontispiece and title page and five inserted plates. 310 pp. Very good red cloth with white polka-dots, black titles on red panels (some wear to corners, red crayon scribble on one page, but a straight and sturdy copy), no dust jacket.

(pen and ink drawings) A novel themed around the post-slavery migration of African-Americans from the South to the North, focusing on a group of "plantation Negroes" whose way of life is upended when the precarious financial situation of their home plantation eventually leads to its sale. From the New York Times review: "The Negroes are torn between their loyalty to their feudal lord, their love of the slow-going ways of life on the plantation, and the inducements held out to them by friends who have gone North to Harlem." The author is further described in the review (and wouldn't you know it?) as "a Southern woman whose personal affection for unlettered, plantation Negroes is as apparent as her intimate knowledge of them.".

Soft-bound in white parchment with gilt stamping on the upper cover and spine. Written by Alexander Pushkin. Translated by Max Eastman. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. Kent's distinctive black-and-white woodcut-style illustrations make this copy just as collectible as the exquisite form that it represents. These 750 copies were printed on Arnold unbleached cream wove (English hand made paper) from text set by hand in Deepdene type designed by Frederic W. Goudy. Typography by S. A. Jacobs and the proofs read by him at the Composing Room of the Stratford Press where the printing was done and under his personal care the whole made into a book bound in Pergamus Sheepskin Parshment at the American Book Bindery (New York). The spine is sunned, however the title is still bold. There is a contemporary owner's name and address on the title page. A story of post-slavery life. Illustrator Rockwell Kent studied architecture at Columbia University (1900-03) and art at the New York School of Art (1903-04) where he was influenced by Robert Henri and had ties with the social realist Ash Can group of artists. Kent was well known for his poster designs which often contained symbolism to convey political or social messages.

Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. 9" X 5-3/4" This book is soft-bound in white parchment with gilt stamping on the upper cover and spine. The cover show some light toning/foxing, and light edge-wear.
