First edition of this detailed pathological study of pseudo-membraneous conditions, notably diptheria and croup, and illustrated with six striking plates, including a number of microscopic histological representations. Joseph Alexandre Laboulbène (1825-1898) was a noted French physician and entomologist. He studied medicine at the University of Paris and was awarded the title of Docteur in 1854. He taught in the medical faculty until 1879. He was one of the founder members of the Societé de Biologie, and is best known for his entomological and parasitological work, and was particularly interested in harmful insects notably in the Order Diptera. The order of mushrooms Laboulbeniales is dedicated to him.

Jean Joseph Alexandre Laboulbene (1825-1898), französischer Mediziner und Entomologe. - An einen Kollegendem er von einem schweren Anfall von "congestion pulmonaire généralisée" eines gemeinsamen Patienten berichtet. "Cher Collègue et Ami, / J'ai ro…uvert ma lettre pour vous renseigner sur un incident sérieux qui est arrivé la veille du départ projeté, dans la nuit de mardi-mercredi, 8-9 de ce mois. A une heure du matin, on est venu me chercher en toute hâte, pour Monsieur de Cholet qui avait été pris d'étouffement. Je l'ai trouvé avec une congestion pulmonaire généralisée. Il était sorti pour aller à la Banque de France et au Chemin de fer. Il avait diné chez un de ses cousins, puis fait une partie de cartes, enfin rentré pour se coucher. Vers onze heures, le malaise était fort, la dyspné est ensuite devenue intense, la respiration sifflante, l'anxiété extrème. Les poumons présentaient à droite au 1/3 inférieur de la submatité et aussi vers la racine du poumon gauche. Le murmure respiratoire était couvert par des râles fins disséminés partout, ils étaient plus fins encore à droite et à gauche, aux points les moins sonores. Il y avait congestion généralisée avec menaces de pneumonie. Une révulsion énergique par des sinapsismes promeneés sur les extrémités inférieures, puis par cinquante ventouses sèches appliquées par le ventouseur de la Charité et restées longtemps en place, ont amené au bout de deux heures une amélioration considérable. Le mieux s'est continué le lendemain. M. de Cholet a gardé le lit et pris très peu de nourriture. Il n'y avait plus que des râles disséminés, plus abondants aux endroits déjà notés. L'expectoration est toujours restée blanche, mousseuse, heureusement non sanglante, sans hématies. Actuellement tout est rentré dans l'ordre habituel. L'état pulmonaire est ce que je vous ai indiqué, je le retrouve comme dans ma première note. J'engage M. de Cholet à partir. Il fait ici un temps humide et malsain, la grippe et le froid nous menacent. Le voyage se fera en deux fois avec arrêt à Marseille. Les voies digestives sont rebelles, la langue chargée. Il faut cinq pilules de Cascara pour purger un peu. L'accident aurait pu être formidable, il est conjuré, mais il indique une tendance congestive qu'il faudra combattre . Tenez-moi vite au courant, je vous prie.".
