This is a version of George Buchanan's paraphrase of the Psalms (first publ…ished at Paris in 1556), edited by Alexander Yule or Julius (d. 1624), formerly master of the Grammar School at Stirling. The work is in fact a set of prose paraphrases of Buchanan's verse paraphrases of the original sacred text. This may be considered an odd conceit, but Yule's version is clearly intended as an aid for schoolboys, who were frequently required to study the text. Buchanan's work had a very long life in the schoolroom, especially in Scotland, and there were translations and versions of it published as late as the early 19th century. Yule dedicates his work to Oliver St John (1559-1630), Lord Deputy of Ireland since 1616, with a long prose dedication and two prefatory poems. The preface explains that he had retired from Stirling after 33 years there, and on settling at Leith he had been at a loose end. Since in his youth he had visited and talked with Buchanan, he thought that an annotated edition, incorporating what he had learnt from the text's author, would be useful: it is to be supposed that at least some of the interpretations, therefore, are directly attributable to Buchanan himself. Although presumably begun at Leith, the work seems to have been finished in London, where it was published by George Eld. There are also prefatory poems addressed to Yule by Henry 'Charteris' (possibly Charters), Patrick 'Sandæus' (Sandys?), John Adamides and John Ray. STC 3989; Durkan, Bibliography of George Buchanan, 117. In many copies the final leaf is blank, but here there is an added errata leaf, as noted by Durkan.
