In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this first-hand account of the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in January 1893 by Alexander, a member of the privy council to King Kal kaua and Queen Lili uokalani. Writing from within the royal administration, he records the queen's attempt to restore monarchical authority and the subsequent seizure of power by the annexationist Committee of Safety, supported by American troops. The narrative reflects the immediate aftermath of the coup and the failed efforts of President Grover Cleveland to secure the queen's restoration following the findings of the Blount Report, ultimately resisted by the provisional government under Sanford B. Dole. Forbes 4721. Oblong octavo. With 42 half-tone, blue, and sepia plates and advertisements, double-page panorama, in-text photographic portraits. Original red cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gilt, decorative frames in black to spine and front cover, buff patterned endpapers. Contemporary ownership inscription of "T. A. Clark" to front free endpaper. Binding a little soiled, wear to spines ends and corners, paper repair to front free endpaper and first ad leaf, superficial split to front hinge. A very good copy.
