Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Very Good+ dj. 2nd printing. DETAILS NEEDED. (B&W sketches, decorations) "A boorish husband, a wife starved for love, and a lover out of the East, exotic, passionate, and chivalrous. Then Fate and a senseless betrayal. Who shall blame the downtrodden French bourgeois wife for preferring the most delicate of lovers to her hum-drum existence, especially since he proves to be a highly sensitive Mandarin of China? People may be shocked and perhaps dismayed by the intense love story that is complicated by a question of race feeling. Yet every one will be charmed by the manner and style of M. de Miomandre, who writes with French sophistication and clarity." The author had been a Prix Goncourt winner back in 1908, and is described in the jacket blurb as "one of the best known young writers in France today"; the blurb writer also intimates that the character of the unknown young author whose domestic life is discombobulated when he wins a literary prize, in Edouard Bourdet's 1927 play "Just Out" (French title "Vient de paraître"), was based on de Miomandre. (The play was filmed in France in 1949, with Pierre Fresnay in the lead.) Howzat for some useless trivia. Illustrated by Alexander Cañedo (illustrator).…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. "A boorish husband, a wife starved for love, and a lover out of the East, exotic, passionate, and chivalrous. Then Fate and a senseless betrayal. Who shall blame the downtrodden French bourgeois wife for preferring the most delicate of lovers to her hum-drum existence, especially since he proves to be a highly sensitive Mandarin of China." Orientale (L'Aventure de Therese Beauchamps), by Francis de Miomandre. Translated by Ralph Roeder. Illustrated by Alexander Canedo. Published by Brentano's Publishers, New York. First edition, 1929. A particularly striking hardback with yellow cloth covers and printed designs to front and spine. The cover with light bumping, but very smart. The dustjacket also has particular visual appeal with Canedo's illustration. The jacket has retained its colour well. With a small loss at tail of spine and some minor wear to extremities. The jacket now housed in protective, removable, clear plastic sleeve. The pink laid endpapers are bright and free of any marks. Text is beautifully clean throughout with stylish illustrations. Top edge is red tinted, as issued. The main flaw in the book is to the top corner of text pages where the text block appears to have been roughly trimmed to a diagonal at the extremity of the text block corner - not affecting printed text in any way. Text in English. Prelims + 199pp. Dimensions: approx 213mm high x 142mm wide x 30mm deep. Weight: approx 628g (unpacked). Alexander Canedo (illustrator).…
