Good+ A pleasing association copy of Pater's important philosophical novel, whose publication coincided with an educational turning point for Alexander Carr-Saunders. Sir Alexander Morris Carr-Saunders, KBE, FBA (18861966) was an English biologist, sociologist, and academic administrator. His "imagination having been fired" by the work of Mendal and William Bateson while at Oxford, like Marius, Carr-Saunders sought new ideas and fields: in 1910 (coinciding with the publication of this edition of Pater's novel), he studied biometrics under Karl Pearson and became secretary of the research committee of the Eugenics Education Society (ONDB). He later worked on The Population Problem (1922), and in 1923 was "called to Liverpool as the first holder of the Charles Booth chair of social science"; from 1937-57 he was Director of LSE, succeeding Sir William Beveridge. Originally published in 1885, Pater's philosophical bildungsroman is set in in the Rome of the Antonines and follows the life and education of Marius, a young Roman, who explores various philosophical schools after becoming disenchanted with traditional religion. It was of huge significance for writers of the fin de siècle, including Pater's former student Oscar Wilde and friend Vernon Lee, and influenced many literary contemporaries of Carr-Saunders, such as Eliot, Proust and Woolf.
