(cartoon drawings) A history of humor, highlighting "the health-giving powers of humor, the pain dispensing powers of wit, the value of laughter to the salesman, the speaker, the politician or to the tired soul beset by his daily problems." Although jacket-blurbed as a "sound, informative and altogether entertaining volume," there is also a patina of pedantry, as the author dutifully runs through all the varieties of humor -- ridicule, wit, riddles, conundrums, puns, repartee, etc. (with copious examples of each) -- perhaps due to his academic credentials as "a member of the Department of Classical Languages and Archaeology at the University of Tennessee [and] the author of many articles on various aspects of humor which have appeared in several Psychological and Classical journals" (which are of course well-known hotbeds of belly-laughs). The proceedings are enlivened a bit by the cartoon illustrations of Ted Key (famous as the creator of the newspaper strip "Hazel"), but it's not hard to imagine an altogether different sort of book that might have been written by, say, Richard Armour (in which case it would have been called "It All Started with the Cavemen"). Illustrated by (dj and illus) Ted Key (illustrator).

Präses.: Wilhelm Rapp studierte ab 1813 und wurde 1817 Arzt in Tübingen. 1819-1827 war er außerordentlicher und 1827-1856 ordentlicher Professor der Medizin an der Universität Tübingen (Ana…tomie der Menschen und Tiere, seit 1844 Zoologie und Zootomie). 1844 war er in Stuttgart maßgeblich an der Gründung des Vereins für vaterländische Naturkunde in Württemberg beteiligt. Resp.: Albertus Hetsch, Biberacensis. Albert Hetsch (1812-^1876), "kath. Theologe, Mediziner, * 15.9. 1812 Biberach, + 6.2. 1876 Rom. Der Sohn evang. Eltern studierte in Tübingen Naturwissenschaften und Medizin, hörte auch Vorlesungen bei David Friedrich -> Strauß und setzte sich mit der Philosophie -> Hegels auseinander (Promotion 1837, De sede sanguinis post mortem). Seit 1836 Assistenzarzt am Stuttgarter Katharinenhospital, besuchte er im Regierungsauftrag Pariser Nervenheilanstalten und begann dort, sich mit religiösen und theologischen Fragen auseinanderzusetzen. H. konvertierte 1847 zur kath. Kirche, trat in das Theologische Seminar zu Orleans ein und wurde dort 1854 zum Priester geweiht. Seit 1856 Regens des Knabenseminars La Chapelle, gründete er 1863 das der religiösen Erziehung der Jugend gewidmete "Oratorium für Weltgeistliche" nach dem Vorbild der deutschen Gründung von Bartholomäus -> Holzhauser."
