Crisp, clean pages except for gentle toning and clear droplet spotting around outside edges and a small, open tear at the top right corner of the half-title page; square, secure binding, the red cloth hard cover showing thin lines of black staining around the head and heel edges, a clear water stain at the spine heel, and much fainter droplet spots on the rear, but remaining overall sound. The jacket has a small scuff at the heel, tiny edge tears at both spine ends, a short tear and crease at the top rear, and small wrinkles at corners, but is otherwise remarkably well-kept, now protected in a clear sleeve.

This book is based on hitherto unpublished material from George Goodwin Dewey, the Admiral's only son, and from Mrs. Edward Byron Smith, a cousin of the Admiral. George Dewey (December 26, 1837 - January 16, 1917) was Admiral of the Navy, the only person in U.S. history to have attained the rank. Admiral Dewey is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. Dewey was promoted to rear admiral in 1899, and full admiral the following year. Returning to the United States in 1899, he received a hero's welcome. New York City's September 1899 welcome home celebration for Dewey was a two-day parade. By act of Congress he was promoted to the special rank of Admiral of the Navy in 1903 with his date of rank retroactive to 1899. fair to good. Some wear and small tears to DJ edges.
