Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. First edition. London, 1753. Rare first edition. Original text of 59 pages, conserved and reset with linen hinges into a casing, floral pattern paper over boards. Good minus. Pages are also attached with linen, in places opening to the spine, but held with linen straps. The trial of Elizabeth Canning became one of the most notorious criminal mysteries in 18th-century English law. The case was addressed by Henry Fielding, then a London Magistrate. For years the case was regularly featured in popular publications of the times. Sides were drawn as to the nature of Canning's disappearance and reappearance a month later, in January 1753, in a 'deplorable state'. Speculations were rife, dividing the city into warring camps. the debate was not merely about Canning's guilt or innocence, but rather "the kinds of sexual identity that were attributable to women of her position in the social order." The incident purportedly also involved an "Old Gypsy Woman" who cut and stole her stays, thus igniting multiple dark social complexes. Artist Allan Ramsay wrote "A Letter to the Right Honourable the Earl of ? Concerning the Affair of Elizabeth Canning." Published close to the incident, in 1753, it was the inspiration for Voltaire's Histoire d'Elisabeth Canning, et de Jean Calas (1762).…
