His work in classical archaeology covered many varied fields, and his knowledge of Greece ranged over mediaeval and modern times as well as the classical period. He was sometime Director of the British School at Athens and it is by his work as excavator of Mycenae, which he began in the 1920s, that he will always be best known. This Companion to Homer was first planned by Professor Wace shortly before the Second World War, while he was Laurence Professor of Archaeol.
