This appears to be rare, with 2 locations on Worldcat (OCLC 490129248: BnF, Universite d'Aix-Marseille). Noting Djibouti's neglect in Arab navigation literature, this work opens by describing its rapid decline as a dhow port by the end of WW2 due to Aden's dominance, how its prospects as a shipbuilding centre were limited by Yemen, and how its captains and crews were predominantly Yemeni. Djibouti did however launch a few "rather fine vessels, albeit small" up to the 1970s. Modern shipping has led to "unremarkable" vessels for tourists, crossings to Tadjoura and Obock, and small scale trafficking. The only elegant ones are Yemeni Zaraqs stopping briefly to load and unload, with South Arabian and Gulf booms, baglah, and sanbuqs passing through infrequently. The terms presented here were collected from Yemeni sailors during voyages made in the Gulf of Tadjoura and Bab el Mandeb. The author especially thanks Omar Burayk Salim, born in Tadjoura to an Afar mother and Hadrami father who taught him shipbuilding. Rouaud laments the loss of Salim's vessel which he considers "one of the most beautiful ever built in Djibouti in 1967". While most of the terms and expressions he presents here are known in the Indian Ocean, they have special relevance in Djibouti. They are presented not in list form, but in the context of detailed descriptions of the types of boats presently found in Djibouti. These are arranged in ascending order of tonnage, covering their physical characteristics, uses, construction methods, etc. The photos show a carpenter at work in Hodeidah, the ornate rear panel of a Zaima, and an adapted dhow in dry dock at Djibouti.
