Zustand: New. Rosenmuller into Latin, cloth backed marbled boards, title gilt on spine, new spine and endpapers, Ambros Barthii, Lipsiae, first and only edition with the Latin translation and following commentary. Muhammad al-Idrisi (born 1100, Sabtah, Morocco (now Ceuta, Spanish North Africa)?died 1165/66, Sicily or Sabtah) was an Arab geographer and adviser to Roger II, the Norman king of Sicily. He wrote one of the greatest works of medieval geography, Kit?b nuzhat al-mushtaq fi ikhtiraq al-afaq. Kitab nuzhat al-mushtaq represents a serious attempt to combine descriptive and astronomical geography. That this effort was not an unqualified success apparently stems from the author's inadequate mastery of the physical and mathematical aspects of geography. He has been criticized not only for failing to make use of the important geographic contributions of other scientists of his times, such as the 11th-century Arab scholar al-B?r?n?, but also for his uncritical use of earlier Greek and Arab sources. Nevertheless, al-Idrisi's book is a major geographic monument. It is particularly valuable for its data on such regions as the Mediterranean basin and the Balkans. #8128.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of the first Italian translation of al-Idrisi's Kitab Nuzhat al-mushtaq, specifically the sections concerning continental Italy. It includes a colour reproduction of al-Idrisi's accompanying map. This edition was produced by Celestino Schiapparelli (d. 1919) and Michele Amari, both professors of Arabic at several Italian universities. Schiapparelli made the first translation of the sections on continental Italy and al-Idrisi's introduction on the geography of the Earth, while incorporating Amari's Italian translation of the chapters on Sicily and al-Idrisi's methodological introduction. This work provides the Arabic text of the section on Italy, with a final list of Arabic place names. The Italian translation is accompanied by detailed footnotes seeking to connect al-Idrisi's medieval geography to 19th-century place names. The map, taken from a manuscript copy at the Bodleian Library, reproduces the Italian peninsula and surrounding islands, with a delineation of Dalmatia. Kitab Nuzhat al-mushtaq was written by the great Arab astronomer and sharif Muhammad al-Idrisi (d. 1165) in 1153-54, by request of the Norman Roger II of Sicily. The king intended al-Idrisi's work to accompany a large map of the world, famously engraved on silver, which had resulted from nearly two decades of research by major geographers and travellers. Octavo. Loosely inserted double-page coloured map on light card stock. Text in Arabic and Italian. Original printed yellow wrappers. Wrappers a little rubbed and soiled, a few small marginal chips, spine restored, contents lightly toned, several leaves unopened, occasional very minor marginal foxing: a very good copy.

In den WarenkorbSecond edition of a Latin translation of a work on the geography of Africa, written by the Islamic geographer and botanist Muhammad al-Idrisi (1100-1165). It deals specifically with the geography of northern Africa, Egypt and the Sahara desert, covering its soil, cities, population, mountains, deserts, rivers and monuments. Al-Idrisi also mentions various travel routes from one city to the other. Around 1138, al-Idrisi was invited to the court of the king of Sicily, Roger II, who asked him to map the world as it was then known. This map is now lost, but Roger II also asked for supplemental texts to comment on the map. "Emissaries were sent far and wide, and from the information they brought back the Kitab al-Rojari [Book of Roger] was compiled, and completed by January 1154" (Howgego). Various manuscripts containing (parts of the) Kitab al-Rojari have survived, and the present translation was based on one of them. The present work was translated and edited by the Johannes Melchior Hartmann (1764-1817), who worked from a medieval Arabic manuscript at the University of Jena. With a library stamp. Somewhat browned and foxed throughout. Binding worn at hinges and along the extremities. Otherwise in good condition.l Gay 345; Howgego, to 1800, I5; not in Atabey; Blackmer. Slightly later black half goatskin, gold-tooled spine, chemical marbled sides. Pages: CXXIV, 530, [50] pp.
