Als zoon van een vermeende heks heeft hij op jonge leeftijd al moeten vluchten, later wordt hij vogelvrij verklaard omdat hij de dochter van een graaf zwanger maakt. In Denemarken verwerft Hroswith zich aanzien als meestersmid, maar dan ontvoeren Arabische slavenhalers hem, en beginnen lange omzwervingen over de grote Russische rivieren, die hem via Constantinopel naar Damascus brengen, waar hij de Arabische poëzie en wetenschap leert kennen. Als Hroswith terugkeert naar de Lage Landen, betrekt keizer Otto hem bij zijn machtsspel. Hroswith volgt het rondreizende hof naar Rome, waar hij de jonge keizer en paus Silvester helpt bij het verwezenlijken van hun grootse plan. Intussen is het apocalyptische jaar 1000 aangebroken; zal er een nieuwe dageraad aanbreken?
