Aitkin (1877-1956) was an early film producer and distributor during the silent film era, noted for his worth with Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith. The Western Film Exchange was founded in Milwaukee in July 1906 by John R. Freuler and Aitkin for the purpose of mass-producing and distributing Western films to movie theaters throughout the American midwest. The company would eventually evolve into RKO Pictures.
