The Traditional Knowledge Systems (TKS) are the corpus of accumulated folk knowledge gained through trial and error through millennia. This folk knowledge therefore has a parental relationship to the elite science. The micro variations of the ambient harsh environment of the hills have been responsible for the extremely rich community knowledge systems and a biodiversity necessary for sustainability of human life here. The mountain people also cultivate many lesser known crops and medicinal plants and this biodiversity is of immense value for the future for genetics health and breeding. Most of the village people depend upon the Himalayan medicine system rather than on the allopathic medicine. There are a lot of folk medicines used extensively to treat animals. The Naulas (water springs) are marvels of traditional hydraulic technology and still serve the demand of clean potable water. The traditional domestic architecture has enabled people to build quake resistant houses. There is a traditional technology for distilling alcohol for drinking purposes and also for making fermented food and beverages. They also have a developed technology for dyeing wool and cotton using a natural dyes. The Kumauni folklore is a veritable treasure of folk knowledge. For an integrated and sustainable development of the hills it is necessary to use traditional technologies. The TKS also helps to understand archeological remains of domestic and temple architecture hydraulic structures and burial remains even of rock art. Despite the tremendous importance and value of traditional knowledge especially in the hilly areas such as Uttaranchal it is at a risk of becoming extinct for various reasons. We do hope that this book will help preserve the traditional knowledge systems of Uttaranchal as also emphasise their use for sustainable development. 174 pp.…

Archaeometallurgy has been situated in the matrix of archaeology. Such studies have a meaning only in the human context of the past. The introductory chapter of the book emphasises, by giving examples, what such technical studies should aim at and what all one can glean about the past through them. The main emphasis is on copper/bronze but other metals have been duly covered: silver, gold, tin, arsenic, lead, brass and iron. As more detailed work is available now for the Indus civilisation and its antecedent cultures, it has been discussed in two detailed chapters. But the other chalcolithic cultures and the copper hoards have also been dealt with in adequate detail. The history of brass is quite polemical and it has therefore been given one full chapter. The chapter on iron summarises all the relevant issues but one could not go into all the details, as it requires a book to itself. The Central Himalayan region has been shown to be equally important for understanding the archaeometallurgy of South Asia. Linguistic evidence has been used to emphasise some of the new perspectives. Socio-economic implications of the archaeometallurgical evidence have been thoroughly discussed. The development of Indian metal technologies has been given in a global perspective but with a different bias. So far the emphasis has always been on West Asia. For the first time South Asian archaeometallurgy has been studied in the context of the eastern cultures of China, Thailand and Japan. The book gives an up-to-date summary of the recent archaeometallurgical evidence from China, Japan and Thailand. The problems to be addressed to in the future studies have also been highlighted. The Indus Civilization is as old as the ancient civilizations of Egypt Mesopotamia and China. It spreads over an area of more than a million sq km an area much bigger than the Mesopotamian and the Egyptian Civilizations which are famous for their sepulchral splendour. Though technologically innovative the Indus Civilization is marked by a modesty and the functionality of its architecture and artifacts. After the classical reports of the excavators of the 30s and 40s of the last century in recent years quite a few synthetic accounts of the civilization have also come out. As the author of the present book has worked not only on archaeology but also on palaeoenvironment and archaeo metallurgy the book gives a holistic account with an interdisciplinary perspective. The data on climate environment metals hydraulics animals plants and agriculture have been given adequate coverage. The book discusses both the elite and folk traditions and the author suggests that the Rama legend carries the echo of the Indus Civilization. The author has covered the latest discoveries from the recent excavations including most of the major and minor Harappan Sites. The Indus Civilization in its mature phase flourished between 2600 1900 BCE though its beginnings can be traced further back. The civilization is marked by a uniformity and standardization over its large territory but now the regional variations appear equally important. It shows considerable variation in town planning yet a baffling uniformity in weights and measures as well as motifs. The book fully captures the uniformity in diversity of the Indus Civilization and covers its different dimensions.
