Zustand: New. James Agee (1909-1955) was a&#160novelist, journalist, poet, screenwriter and film critic, the author of such landmark works as Let Us Now Praise Famous Men and Agee on Film. His posthumously published novel A Death in the Family.

Hardcover. Edited by Michael Sragow. 8vo. Tan cloth with gilt spine lettering, ivory slipcase. 818pp, (5pp). Numerous illustrations, decorative endpapers, sewn-in tan satin page marker. Fine/fine. A tight and pristine first edition thus (volume 159) of this thick trio of writings, with 64 pages of Walker Evans photographs in this edition. Interesting autograph addition: Agee's autobiographical "A Death in the Family" was published posthumously in 1957, and in 1960 playwright Tad Mosel penned a stage version retitled "All the Way Home," for which he won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize. In 1963 a film version was released, and tipped to an inner flyleaf of this volume on a fine heavy stock 5" X 3" card is the bold signature of the sole living cast member: JOHN C. CULLUM signs in blue ballpoint, dating it 20 September 1969 at upper right. Cullum (born 1930) portrays Andrew; many remember him best as tavern owner Holling Vincoeur in the t.v. series "Northern Exposure" 91990-95). Interesting autograph addition: Agee's screenplay "Night of the Hunter" was turned into the 1955 film noire thriller starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and Lillian Gish -- this last of whom has boldly signed in black fineline a fine heavy stock 5" X 3" card tipped to an inner flyleaf. Gish (1896-1993) who portrays Rachel Cooper in the film, was nicknamed "The First Lady of the Silent Screen" and her many films ranged from silent classics such as "Birth of a Nation" (1915) to made-for-television dramas such as "The Whales of August" (1987).
