Some light foxing throughout, front cover mostly detached, withal a good copy in an interesting early paperback binding. This is the second edition of Afzelius' translation of the Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks into Swedish from the original Old Icelandic. Originally published in 1811, Afzelius sought to bring this legendary saga to a broader readership. This work is one of the key inspirations for J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, the two sharing many similarities and parallels. Arvid August Afzelius was born in Enköping in 1785 and spent much of his life in service to his native parish as a priest. Between clerical duties, he spent his time translating ancient folk-songs and mythologies into Swedish and collaborated with Erik Gustaf Geijer in his collection of Swedish songs.…

Spine repaired at head on volume I, leather heavily worn at the top of spine on volume III. Head of spine repaired on the appendix volume containing the musical notes, in which the front endpaper is also torn out. Occasional minor spotting a few marginal tears ans paper losses.The engraved title depicts a blind singer with a harp in a Macphersonic manner. The third volume also with the subtitle: "med öfversättning av motsvarande skotska folksånger" [with translations of corresponding Scottish folk songs]. The similarities between the Scottish and Swedish popular poetry are seen as "evident witnesses of a time when all these Nordic peoples who inhabited the islands and beaches of the Baltic and North Seas shared a common language and litterature".
