This was Cook's third voyage, starting in 1776, and the one in which he met his death in 1779. John Webber was the artist who accompanied Cook and his crew, and his drawings were subsequently engraved for the publication. Webber, only 27 years old at the time, went on to become a well known painter and fellow of the Royal Academy, but today is known mainly for his association with Cook and especially his painting of Cook's death and its many engraved versions. One principal purpose of Cook's voyage was to find the elusive North-West passage, which Cook failed to do. In the attempt he visited Kamchakta (in Russia), which is where Webber drew this scene. The print is on laid paper consistent with the date of 1784.
